Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well, after trying Canidae pure sea Myla & Chloe were having poop issues after a month or so. So we got a credit on it and bit the bullet (after a lot of research) and bought the 6 fish Orijen, OMD! I thought Chloe would stroke out when we got home. We fed them a tiny bit before we left for the store so they wouldn't miss their supper completely. Then when we got home with the 29lb bag and Chloe came running down the stairs and poked her nose in the crease of the bag and then stood on it and pawed at it and I said I think we need to mix the rest and give her the rest of her dinner. I guess they were right when

they said the strong smell really appeals to them! So we gave it to them and Chloe sucked it up like a vac in her slow feed bowl by the way~! She pushed the bowl against the wall and flipped it. I wish I would have had the camera out. Myla liked it just as well and kept eyeing Chloe to make sure wasn't coming near her bowl! Too funny. Everyday about an hour and half before their dinner Myla would also run back and forth looking at me and whining but now it's Chloe-everytime I moved this afternoon they both jumped up instantly and followed me. It was quite annoying but I love knowing they love the food that is good for them! Thanks to you all in the foodgroup helping us make the decision. More importantly thank you for bringing the jerky treats to our attention, they are going back to the store!

My husband talked to someone from Orijen and they told him that they are planning on rolling out treats in 2011 that have the same quality as their food. I'm so glad we went grain free. I hope it all works out ok

.

We walked around the pet store with the owner looking for better treats for them we were looking mostly for something made in usa and also that didn't have the bad ingredients or preservatives. Any ideas for a grain free or low fat treat? I have not talked my husband into antlers OR bully sticks.

I'm amazed to hear that. We fed our Goldens the same food for most of their 10 and 13 years of life. No allergies whatsoever. So interesting. I am feeding Wellness Core, grain free. Both of my dogs would eat anything in 1 minute flat with the slow feed bowls. Maybe I should switch flavors. I am getting it from PetFlow and it comes monthly. I wonder if I can have them change it up every so often.

We have talked about rotating foods a lot here in TFG. But you don't have to change brands. You can stay with the same brand and use a different formula. Many companies have lines that are designed for this purpose. I rotate between Orijen Regional Red and the Orijen Adult formula, and also give fresh food several times a week, adding fish, eggs or meat to my dog's meals.

TOTW is a good food, but it is not better quality than Orijen. IMO, no kibble is. However, variety is important in a dog's diet, just as in humans diets.

BTW, it is true that food allergies can develop if a dog eats the same food day in and day out, but that is unrelated to colitis, and has to do with using the same protein sources constantly over long periods, not with a using one particular brand. And food allergies in general are relatively rare in dogs.

I have noticed discussions mentioning feeding different flavors of food but I mistakenly thought it was for dogs who got tired of their food flavor. Lesson learned today. Thank you.
Yeah, me too
We will have to look into this, we would be willing to rotate flavors if that's what you mean not brands.
Yes, there's no reason to switch brands, although it's nice to have an alternate brand you can go to in an emergency situation. You can rotate between the three adult Orijen formulas. JD doesn't like the 6 Fish formula lately, but he's goofy that way. He started out with that one and loved it. Then we introduced the regular Adult formula, which is poultry based, and then the Regional Red, which is meat based. That's his current favorite.

Hi Everyone,

The reason that the vet suggest TOTW was because there would be 4 flavors to rotate through.  He told me no fish, no matter what the brand for the forseeable future.

Why no fish? Just curious. Haven't tried it.
I'm curious, too. Fish is extremely good for dogs; the Omega 3 helps their skin and coats, and it's a natural food for many breeds. It's also one of the least likely protein sources to cause allergies or food sensitivities.
Exactly what we were told Karen
Nina, I was just looking at all four TOTW formulas, and only one of them does not contain fish, the Sierra Mtn formula. The other three all contain fish meal. So if your dog can't have fish, you really don't have anything to rotate through.
I just put my dogs on TOTW Sierra Mtn, and they love it.  No more hesitating to eat.  Transitioning them was a piece of cake.  No tummy or bowel upset at all.
