Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have an 11 month girl doodle..she is just hitting her stride....so sweet, not into things, calming down, loves her crate at night and when we are gone. Totally potty trained. She weighs about 20 pounds and should max out at 23-25 lbs. she doesn';t shed and I am not allergic. I have asthma, but Ginger has not made it worse.
We live in a townhouse..patio backyard...so walks and patio. Our house is average, but being a townhouse, it is vertical living. Our living room is small.
I teach all day Monday and a couple of hours the rest of the days of the week. This schedule is great for Ginger.
Things seem GREAT..... but I am thinking of getting another puppy....he would be the same size as Ginger when he is grown..maybe a little bigger.
SOme people say yes (me) and some say no (DH)
What are the feeling of the group. Are two more trouble than one? Do they bond with humans as well if there is another dog around? Do two doods take up the whole back seat and where would my son sit? (in the middle of his dogs. I'm sure...but serioiusly?)
How do you walk two dogs?
Would my life become more complicated?
thanks
Pam

1) Yes life is more complicated
2) Don't expect the 2nd one to be the same personality and as easy to train etc. No 2 doods are never alike! LOL!
3) If you really want one start crying-that's how I took care of the DH thing. Then there was 2!
Some really great points Jennifer...especially number 3!! Lol...
I am a dedicated two dog person because of our personal experience of raising two dogs together. When dogs have been raised with another dog, they become very dependent on having that other dog around. However...you live in a small home and have a child. Training a new puppy would not be an enjoyable task under those circumstances and they will be pretty close in age also.
My personal opinion is that three years difference in age works best. Currently my dogs are 1 and 5 years and that works really well. Are two dogs more trouble than one? Definitely. Would your life be more complicated with two dogs? Definitely also. Walking is a problem and they need to be trained to do it on your schedule. The puppy would need to go out frequently and the older dog just a couple of times a day. Dogs and kids in the same seat? It doesn't sound safe to me.
If I were you, I would wait until I had a larger home with a back yard and a larger vehicle with a built in (separate) area for the dogs. Just my opinion but we are pretty experienced with multiple dogs and dogs in general. We have had one or more dogs our entire married life and with our children, and dogs as companions earlier than that.
I would wait longer. My Peri is a mini goldendoodle and is also a nut job like Jane says....She is almost 2.5 years old!!! I love her to death but cannot imagine another right now. We have a chihuahua - he is almost 8, so they are about 5 years apart in age. I can see getting another doodle in a few years, but I see craziness with that too!
Life is way more complicated with two. I love having 2 and probably always will, but that's my two cents.
