My puppy Gracie drink a lot of water! She is only 12 weeks old. I got her when she was 6 weeks old. I know it's early, but it was just how things worked out this time...
Up until this point I have been keeping her on a "potty schedule" so that she doesn't have the opportunities to make accidents in the house. I feel like now she is finally old enough to understand the "potty training" concepts.
The problem is, she drinks so much water! She has accidents in the house because she drinks so much. This problem just started within the past two weeks. It wasn't a problem before and she was having less accidents. When she pees, the puddle is the size of an over sized platter and the urine is almost completely clear. All this tells me is that she is drinking way more than she needs to.
I have done some research, and most of what I've read says that some puppies just "like" to drink a lot of water. I also know that it can be a sign of some illnesses and diseases.
I read that dogs should drink approximately 1 oz. of water per pound of body weight a day. Would it be too extreme to measure out her water and give it to her at scheduled times during the day? I feel like she will have a lot of trouble being potty trained with a bladder that is about to burst all the time.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Our dog, Vern, can drink his weight in water and he is almost 100 pounds. He drinks and drinks and drinks, yet he can hold his urine for hours. Sometimes, I think my full time job is filling up his water dish and it is compounded by the fact that he is a messy drinker and Fudge won't drink out of the water bowl when he is done. He has been this way since he was little. Go figure. Our other dog, Fudge, just drinks what I consider the normal amount. I would never limit water, but that is me. You may just have to increase the frequency you take her out until her little bladder gets bigger.
If you are still worried, talk to your vet!
my dog Gracie drinks tons of water - I even had her tested for Diabetes - which she doesn't have - because it seems so extreme. She just loves water. I think the 1oz per per pound is how much they need - not necessarily how much they might want. I would not limit her water when you are with her, but if you know that she is going to be crated for a stretch or at night I don't see a problem with taking up her water about an hour before she needs to go into her crate. Just as a precaution I would mention it to the vet at her next regular visit - I assume she is still getting her puppy vaccines.
My Molly (5 months old) was like this for a while. Now she goes through spells where she'll drink a lot one day, but not the next. None of my other two were like this. It did make housebreaking a little more challenging, but we got through it.
