Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello all!  I am very new to DK and have read a lot on the different types of coats GD's have.  I look at our new pup, Teddy (TedderBear) and see her coat as very curly.  If I leave her coat long and groomed, will it straighten out a bit, kinda like a kinky perm? Also, it seems her coat is fairly easy to maintain right now but have read this will change?  As far as grooming goes, I plan on brushing her coat often but when it comes to clipping and shaving, I plan on leaving that to the groomer.  When the time comes, how do I communicate to the groomer that I do not want anything that resembles a poodle cut?  Just that??

Carol, You might want to join the Grooming group here on DoodleKisses. They have tons of information on coat change, etc. I found a great groomer and it is always good to take in pictures of what you like. I like the longer hair on both dogs, but Fudge is a F1B Labradoodle and she mats terribly if it gets too long and Vern is always rolling in something, so shorter is better there too...LOL! Good luck!

I suggest you take in photos of the cut you like. There are also some guidelines in the Grooming Group you could print out and take with you. A popular cut is the Puppy Cut

I keep Coopers fur long and it straightens out into kinks, but in the summer when she is cut short it is much curlier

Cooper last summer at age 1 1/2

Cooper now at 2 1/2

Cooper (Australian Labradoodle)  has a thick wool coat. Some dogs have fleece so it depends on which your pup has but these photos may help you. To get the long fur kink look, I dont brush Cooper very often otherwise she goes fluffy. She doesnt mat too much, so I just pull apart any mats that may be forming with my fingers (every day) and give her a big brush once a month.

WOW!  What a coat!  The above pic looks very similar to her coat right now but her tail isn't as fluffy and her coat isn't as light, but already I can see her tips are lighter than they were just two weeks ago!  It certainly will be interesting to see the changes she goes through.

OH, also does the puppy cut trim around the eyes for better sight? and trim down on the bridge of the nose?

hmmm i think so but im not sure, I cut Cooper myself and just make it up as I go along
She certainly is cute.  When she is about 3 - 4 months old, I would begin taking her to the groomer - they won't really need to do much but you will be getting her used to being groomed.  Take a calendar or pictures you have copied from doodlekises to show what you want her to look like. She may not ever mat but you should be brushing her with a good brush and comb.  If she does mat, it will be POOF and overnight, most likely beginning with ears or neck area. Ned is an ALD but here is what he looked like as a puppy.  At his first grooming, the groomer cut too much between the eyes but she cared about learning how we wanted him to look. And now - long and short

The groomers here won't take pups until they've had their rabies shot which will be in 3 weeks, so that'll be her first trip to the groomers.

I love the look of the 3rd picture you show.  The coat is beautiful.  That's what I'll be going for.  Is there a name for it? or did you just tell them specifically what you wanted?

I love my groomer and we just worked out what he should look like.  To my knowledge there are no names for doodle cuts like poodles or schnauzers etc. Ned is three now - notice that shave between the eyes at his first cut - same goomer, she just didn't know any better then.  I buy her a doodle calendar each year so she  has samples.  Lots of members actually copy pictures of the doodle cuts they like and take them to the groomer.  I will tell you that Ned's coat is high maintenance (big time) and when it is long, we have to brush/comb it 2 times a week.  This is also his mature coat and when he was past the major matting stage because during that stage we brush/combed him at least every other day and even then he was still matted.  Not all doods have that kind of coat though, but many do.
I love the bottom photo! What a great cut! The face is PERFECT!!!!!!!!!
Thank you.
