Just heard from the vet that Winston has hypothyroidism. This explains why he always looks so sad. I call him Winnie the Pooh but he is actually more like Eyore. It also could be contributing to a number of other problems, like the skin irritation, the dry fur with the oily feeling, being prone to ear infections, etc.

I am actually kind of relieved to have this diagnosis, in a strange way, because I know that now he will get the treatment he needs. I am so glad I insisted on the initial blood test when the vet said it wasn't necessary. Doodle-mommas know best!

I'm off to get his meds. The vet said he is going to be like a whole new dog when he starts this treatment. I can't wait to see him blossom!

Hope the sweet Pooh will feel better soon!
Great intuition Momma Doodle!!  Looking forward to your stories about Eyore's progress!!! :)
How wonderful that you now have a course of action to take.  Looking forward to hearing all about his new attitude!
From Eyore to Tigger? Hope he feels better soon! When are some doctors and vets going to learn, listen to the Momma!
oh goodness, I sure hope not. I already have a tigger in Sophie Bear, and a Rabbit in Penelope the Kitty. I wouldn't mind a Pooh, or an Owl, or a male Kanga. But please, not another Tigger!! :)
Winston get better soon!  Hugs from Lily
I am so glad that you caught this. I am sure he will be feeling much, much better very soon.

Sherri, I'm so relieved that you have a diagnosis and it's something easy to treat! Easier than treating Atopy, and less expensive, too!

If you hadn't adopted him, who knows if anyone would ever have looked into his issues and gotten him some help? You truly saved Winnie's life and now he's able to start a wonderful brand new one. Hugs to you and all of your babies!

I'm not counting my blessings yet on the Atopy, the vet still thinks he has allergies. He wouldn't be itchy with the hypothyroidism, just prone to bacterial and yeast infections. I think some of the rash in his belly area is due to the thyroid, but the paw chewing is another story. Even though he's on venactyl he still chews from time to time. The vet said it should calm down in a few weeks and then we will only know if he really has allergies next year when the season starts up again.

You're right about the less expensive part. $44 for a 90 day supply is not bad at all.

I know. I'm glad your vet is so well-informed on Atopy, and mentioned that he might still have it. But we are keeping our fingers crossed that it's just a mild case that only affects him seasonally and minimally, and once everything else is fine, you can control it with antihistamines and fatty acids.

Sherri, you are an inspiration.  Winnie was so meant to be with you.  I can't wait until you can start to share how this guy starts to show is real personality once he's being treated.
Thanks for all your kind words everyone. I am predicting some great blog material in my future :o)
