Just heard from the vet that Winston has hypothyroidism. This explains why he always looks so sad. I call him Winnie the Pooh but he is actually more like Eyore. It also could be contributing to a number of other problems, like the skin irritation, the dry fur with the oily feeling, being prone to ear infections, etc.

I am actually kind of relieved to have this diagnosis, in a strange way, because I know that now he will get the treatment he needs. I am so glad I insisted on the initial blood test when the vet said it wasn't necessary. Doodle-mommas know best!

I'm off to get his meds. The vet said he is going to be like a whole new dog when he starts this treatment. I can't wait to see him blossom!

Sherrie, glad Winnie got a diagnosis that is easy to deal with! How old is Winston?

Winston is five years old.

That is such great news. I have become rather attached to Winnie while I have been reading your discussions.  He is such a sweet looking boy and is so lucky he found you and you will make him well again.  It is also great to know that all the medical problems can be taken care of with medication.  I don't for one minute think he is sad because he is missing his past.  I also think like some of the others that he just hasn't figured out yet that this is his forever home and you are his forever Momma. Give him time and in a few weeks he will be forever your best friend!
Thanks Nancie :)

So glad you got a diagnosis for Winnie - and it is treatable.  You guys were meant to be a family.

thanks! I think so too!

Hoping Pooh is a happy Pooh very soon!
wow, I never even knew dogs could get hypothyroidism...makes sense though!!! Good luck, can't wait  to hear how he does with the new meds!

So glad you pushed on and were able to find out what's wrong with him. I told you he couldn't be sad with you and Sophie!

I hope is treatment does well and you get a more active doodle. He would have never got this care before you!

Thanks. You know, when I think about how his former owners exclaimed how awesome it is that he is so "calm and laid back" I just want to punch them so hard. ... OK, I always wanted to punch them but now more than ever!

I took him for a run tonight and he did great! I am more pooped than he is, lol!

Oh Sherri, Winston must have been so thrilled to get to run with you! Our dogs run with my husband five days a week and it is the highlight of their existence. I think you mentioned that you would love to run with Sophie when she is ready. Now Winston is filling that desire a little earlier. Mike runs 3-5 miles. Our dogs are great running companions.
