Is your dog microchipped?

My little guy is due to get microchipped this week, and even though I think microchipping is in general a great idea, I'm just a touch nervous b/c I have read some articles that suggest sarcomas are possible at the microchip site...certainly not the norm by any stretch, but...?

What are your thoughts and experiences with this?

Yes, I totally agree it is a worthwhile procedure. For sure.

I asked my breeder not to microchip him just yet. I'm going to wait to microchip until he is getting neutered around 6-7 months. That way he will be under anesthesia. Also, my breeder mentioned tattooing as another option. So I am going to research that, but whichever I do I just want him to be under during.

Anyone have thoughts/experience with tattooing? :-)

My GSD rescue group used to tattoo the dogs prior to widespread use of microchips. The problem is, what are you going to tattoo on the dog? Your phone number? Will it always be the same for the life of the dog? You can change the information on a tag and a chip registration. A tattoo is permanent.

There is a dog tattoo registry, here's some information:

Interesting. Thanks Karen!
I have read about dogs being stolen and mutilated to get rid of the tattoo also. I'd guess that's mainly for fighting dogs. Horrible.
Wow. That is awful.
CHIP - I'd rather risk some very slight odds of a problem than risk losing my Doodle and not having the peace of mind knowing that my contact information is ALWAYS with her!!!
Yes this is very true!
I was actually thinking whether you could put in a microchip that could be tracked by satellite.  I know that sounds far fetched but if Riley was stolen he could be found quite easily.  If no one has invented this..?
I think it's a brilliant idea, just not sure how possible??? There would have to be GPS-type programming/communication in the chip, so I wonder if that would emit a harmful frequency? I have no idea! Just a guess, but if it were safe I think it's a great idea!
Thanks Dana, I am definitely going to get him chipped! Only 1 more week and I get to meet him!!!
Oh no! Something else to worry about.  I hadn't heard about that. But after reading what everybody said, I'll try to put this in my " hope it will never happen" drawer.  My puppy will be chipped by the breeder.
