Last night I heard Monty give out a woof.  I thought he needed to go out but instead of finding him at the door, he was laying in the hallway.  Then I heard a noise on the deck, peeked outside, yep there he was!  We hurried down to the back door, turned on the light.  He went over the the bird feeder which was nearly empty, pawed at it and left it alone. (he had already ripped another off the hanger)  Within a few minutes, he casually left the deck and back into the woods.

I  was able to get my camera to work this time, but took this thru a door window and a screen door.  Darn, I tried to keep my cool to get pics this time.  I think you can see this big black bugger walking away.

This is him too.

You may recall we put up some inexpensive fencing to keep Monty in the yard.  Well that nice bear actually came and left at the same spot.  And so here is a pic of where he gently crossed over the fence.

Fun times!

OMD!  Be careful!!!
YIKES!

Wow--I used to live in the Catskill Mountains and I had a bear visit me early one morning and empty my bird feeders. Apparently it also took a nap because it left a big patch of flattened grass. And some poop. Be careful--and I wouldn't put any feeders back up until winter, when they're hibernating.

Yep, feeders down.... again.  :(
Sounds like we need to eat some bear burgers.. Be careful.
WAY too close!!!! Can this bear be captured and relocated?

Last week a couple in the same county we live in had a bear enter their house when trying to get the dog inside.  What a crazy thing.  What I didn't like hearing is that bears and dogs are mortal enemies!  Sometimes we simply leave Monty go outside during the night, not anymore.  We will have to be vigilant and look around before letting him out the door.  So no, they wont move the bear unless he has been a threat.

And how do they define "threat"? Call me a wuss but I would consider a bear on my porch a threat!! I wonder if an air horn or some loud noise being sounded before you go outside would scare him off? Maybe he would get tired of it.  I have a friend who has problems with a bear getting into her trash can. She was told to put ammonia into the can so when the bear opens the lid it gets a good whiff of it. It has worked really well for her. Perhaps you can do something similar in the area where the bird feeders normally hang to discourage him?
Most bears are actually pretty shy (mama bears excluded)--the one that visited my house was easily  scared off with a loud bang on the window. It's when people feed them that they become a threat--as always, it's really the people who are the problem, not the animal. Chances are if Sharon keeps the feeders down and keeps the garbage shut tight, the bear will make itself scarce. But this is definitely the time of year they're more of a presence, as they try to fatten up for winter. In my neighborhood in the Catskills we all kept our garbage in little sheds, and one bear completely upended a garbage shed--picked it up and tossed it aside like it was made of popsicle sticks.
Does anyone remember 'The Sopranos' episodes where a bear made an appearance?  This reminds me of that.  I like seeing bears but not that close.
Wow!  I hope he doesn't come back.  Be careful!
I don't have bird feeders because they attract too many critters from mice on up. I just try to have plants around from which the birds get berries/fruit.
