Just curious at what age did you owners start noticing, if at all, when your doods began marking outside? I have an 8 month old male ALD, and he still squats to pee. I am hoping this continues... Are there any tricks to train him not to mark if I do notice he starts to lift his leg?
Tanner will be two years old in January....He hasn't marked yet and he still squats to pee...So far, he hasn't lifted his leg...We have always taken him outside on a leash, when he wanted to do his pee...In June we built a fence for him, and there are no trees out there in the backyard...I always wonder if thats why he hasn't lifted his leg,
Rosco was neutered just before 5 months. And it took him 5 or so months AFTER that to lift. But the vast majority of neutered-young dogs do NOT lift in the house even if they eventually mark outdoors. I think it might happen on rare occasion, but not if the dog is potty trained. See below....Rosco lifts on already-marked trees and other things that have been marked (once a statue of a dog!) but NEVER in our own yard on our own trees (even after his Daddy tried to demonstrate how it is done! LOL).
Rosco's first leg lift was at about 10 months I think...maybe a year...not sure.
BUT he ONLY marks on trees that have been marked and only on things outside. He does NOT mark anything in our yard or home. And squats to pee 90% of the time unless he's at the dog park or I let him get near a marked tree on leash. I wouldn't worry about it =)
That's how Halas is. He's 14 months old, and he mostly squats. Every once in awhile, he'll slightly hike his leg in the yard. And if we're in the dog park, I've noticed him hiking his leg sometimes. But he's never marked in the house.

Teddy is 13 months and still squats - I think we saw him lift a leg once several months ago - but it was a minor leg lift combined with a squat - so may not have been a lift at all. We got him fixed at about 6.5 months.
Casey started to mark when he was about 2 years old - and I'm convinced the neighbor's dog taught him how! Since Copper will come over and mark stuff, Casey now feels compelled to remark.
Rufus just started marking a little - he usually squats to pee - he will be two in February. Jacoby has always lifted his leg, but I don't think he's marking yet. No sniffing and "forced" peeing for him yet - he'll be one in February.
We had Dex neutered at 5 months - he started lifting his leg (sometimes) around 1 yr. He still half squats and half lifts...I think the dogs at the dog park taught him to lift. He marks on trees, but never inside.
Kirby wasn't neutered until after we got him (~13 months) and he always lifts...he marks on trees, but never inside.
Both of my dogs mark, and one is female! Rocky started marking fairly early; probably around 9 months. He got neutered when he was 6 months. Lilo was spayed when she was around 6 months old also, and has pretty much marked ever since ;) It doesn't bother me as long as they don't pee on someone's purse or similar. They mostly stick to fire hydrants, bushes and dog poop.
My goldendoodle is almost 4 1/2 and has never marked. I thought it strange at first until I met many others whose dogs never marked. He squats to pee and we think it's great since we don't need ot find every tree in the neighborhood. Great in the cold winter months.
