Bone Whining

Does anyone elses Doodle stare and whine at their bone.  Lincoln does this quite often.  He'll stop chewing his bone and it will be only inches from him, and he just whine at it...strange

Bandit will occasionally run around and cry with a bone or toy in his mouth.. silly doodles

Shelby does this too.... it's like she is saying "oh I love this bone, but I don't want it right now.... what do I do with it... I don't want to lose it or have it taken away"

My dog Scottie used to do that.  He was always so proud of a new bone or toy :D  I miss him soooo much.

Yep.  Camus will whine when he gets something he thinks is special, especially since I no longer let him bury his prizes -- I think he is afraid it will disappear!

Shelby does this too!!!   It's really quite silly!   Fortunately... she doesn't try to bury her prizes, but she has tried to hide them in the couch!

Luna picks up any toy she hasn't seen in a long time, walks around wagging her tail whining... it's almost like she's having a "reunion" with her toy!

Myla is keeper of the toys and she will run around the house with the zoomies and one in her mouth just growling the whole time like she's teaching it a lesson! Not sure why he would be whining at it?

My dog Scott used to whine when I gave him a new bone, and trot around the house so proud, but this is different.  Lincoln stops chewing his bone, then lays on his side, and stares at the bone and whines...LOL  So bizarre.  I usually snap him out of it, but it's strange while he's doing it. I think maybe he is worried it will leave or I'll take it if he leaves it alone.  I had to take a bone from him the other night because I was going to bed, and I don't let him chew these while I'm not around.  He put up quite the resistance...:D  I could barely pry his jaws apart...LOL

LOL...That is funny!!!  It's like he thinks it's alive when he's looking at it.  Maybe he thinks the cats will grab it or his other toys...LOL  He whines at my cats too if they are hiding near him where he can see them, but not get to them, but his bone is in plain sight, and reach.  He's growled at his bone before too :O  What a clown!!!

Cubbie used to do the whining with bones (usually rawhides before I learned more about them) and special treats around the same time that we had some resource guarding issues with him.  We spent a lot of time working with a trainer and I asked her why he would run from room to room with his treat and just whine but never settle down and chew it.  She said that it likely had something to do with him not feeling "safe" with it which tied in with the resource guarding.  It all made sense at the time.  We stopped giving him the rawhides because I read some unpleasant things about them and to prevent the resource guarding and he hasn't done the whining with a bone since then.  I am interested in the fact that other people's doodles do this though too, maybe the trainer was wrong and it had nothing to do with him feeling stressed about protecting that bone.  hmmm...

Lincoln has never had any resource guarding issues. I actually hand feed my dogs when they are puppies to get them used to me having my hand in their food, and I also hold their bones while they chew. I guess I developed a trust with them that way. Lincoln loves to chew his bones in the same room as us and usually chooses to lie right near us. Lincoln and my cats have shared bowls without him even batting an eye, but don't get me wrong I do not encourage this behavior. I tell the cat or dog whoever is intruding to move along. I did have a little trouble getting the bone from him though the other night, but he never growled. He is on the nothing for nothing training program. He always has to earn his rewards as he is dominant. I still don't know why he whines. I'll ask my behaviorist, and see what she says
