Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Mike and I have an Aussiedoodle, Wesley, coming on December 1. We know we are going to transition Wesley from the Iams kibble the breeder is currently feeding him and we know to wait a few weeks before we start the transition. We are thinking about feeding Wesley the Fromm Four Star Nutritionals Salmon kibble because it is rather small, which I think would be good for a puppy. Does anyone see any problem with feeding Wesley salmon over chicken?

Thank you all in advance!

Hi ladies, just saw this as I am setting up for DH Baby Shower! Our experience with Fromm from the beginning was very good with our 16 month old Bella. She came from the breeder on it and there was no problem switching favors from bag to bag. She came on chicken if I remember correctly. The size doesn't appear to be an issue, but if you know anything about Bella, that wouldn't surprise you. ( she just pooped out another PAIR of grandson socks yesterday! )

Transition slowly from the Iams as I'm sure you've read in the FG already, but salmon or chicken, Wesley will be much better off than feeding Iams, and both should be well tolerated. Go slow like Karen said, and they give great sample bags of all favors at my Pet Club here in AZ.

I find I can even can switch good quality kibble from brand to brand when need be as sometimes Fromm has been hard to get. (Special orders)
The difference in the chicken size kibble from other favors and brands was noticeable but certainly not problematic even as a 12 pd puppy. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Sue! Have a wonderful time at the shower!

If you are concerned with kibble size, the Puppy Gold kibble is significantly smaller than any of the single-protein 4 star line.

Maggie transitioned to Fromm Puppy Gold and around 5 months we moved her to Large Breed Adult Gold and the 4 star Pork and Apple, split about 50-50 in her bowl. When she finishes the bag of Pork we will try the lamb I think.

I don't have any particular rationale for doing it that way, but I love the entire line of food and she is doing so well on it. I like having the consistency of the Adult Gold and playing around with the variety of the 4 star. She responds well to that.

Thank you Sue!  I think I will try a small bag of the chicken and see how Welsey does with that.  Have a great time at the baby shower!

Julie - Thank you for the suggestion of the Puppy Gold.  I want to try to keep Wesley on a single protein for now just to see how he does.  I know the Puppy Gold has duck, lamb, chicken and fish meal in the ingredients; whereas the Four Star Nutritionals are mainly single protein with fish meal.

Thank you Karen!!!!

The chicken and salmon kibble pieces are the smallest.  The duck and pork flavors are probably the biggest, but they are still not too big - they are round and flat, so I think they are still easy to chew. My Peri is a mini and has always eaten any of these sizes without difficulty.
