Monty's dew claw pad has been cracking constantly in our dry Colorado weather. It happens usually when he runs around with his girlfriend. It's usually the right paw as well. I keep finding the dew claw pad cracked and bleeding. Is this happening to any of your doods as well? If so, what's the remedy?

Thank you!

Is it possible that his dew claw is catching on things and that's what's causing the pad to bleed and/or crack?

You can try giving him fish oil or evening primrose oil capsules to increase the amount of essential fatty acids he's getting. That may help. I've heard of people using Musher's Wax for dry cracked pads, too, but I have no experience with it.

Karen, his dew claws have been removed so I think it truly is just dry pads. All his paws are generally dry to start with so I will definitely try to use some kind of oil capsules in his diet. Thank you.

In the winter we use Mushers on Daisy's paws and nose, she gets dry.

Where do you buy it?

We got it at PetSmart last year.

Have one tonight here myself.  :(   Just found it when I wiped off the mud from the pad.  It looks so sore.

Ohhh, don't you just want to kiss the pain away?

Jarka, I'm going to wait until she goes to sleep and use some topical antibiotics just for tonight.

We use corn hunkers lotion when our two get real dry pads. Works great for us too when it's very dry (Arizona). A farmer told DH about it when we were traveling. He had used it for years on his animals.

Where do you buy Corn Hunkers?  A regular health food store, drug store??

I think they sell that at Farm and Fleet, you can also get the Mushers there.

I've gotten it at our local grocery store. You have to really look for it. Not sure what category they put it in, skin care maybe
