I bought a cheap dehydrator at Kohls. I think it was about $26.00. I make chicken jerkey strips in it that the dogs go nuts over.

Great idea Lynne...how do you cut the strips, do you have the butcher cut them or do you cut them at home? How thick?

Liva Drops

4 cups quick oats
1 cup cooked and chopped beef or calves liver
1/4 cup beef broth
4 large eggs

1. Preheat over to 350 degrees
2. Mix everything together
3. Use rounded teaspoon and make round balls onto greased cookie sheet
4. Bake 10-15 minutes until golden brown
5. Let cool and store in airtight container in refridgerator.

Make a double batch because they will go crazy over these.

This is one our girls really love...
Small jar of fruit baby food - I use banana and strawberries
2 small containers of vanilla low fat yogurt.
Mix together and freeze in ice tray.

Easy, but tasty.

Here's a tip for those whose dogs love fish, as Jackdoodle does. As many of you know, there have been concerns about mercury levels in tuna. The bad news is, most people's preferred type, canned solid white albacore tuna, has the highest mercury levels. The good news is, the chunk light type has the lowest levels...very little if any mercury in it. It's also much cheaper. Jackdoodle really doesn't know the difference, lol! I find that adding some to his bowl of kibble makes him eat up the whole bowl of food...the "juice" from the tuna makes the kibble more palatable.

Great idea. I wonder why the chunk light has little or none? Shouldn't people watch that too?

Absolutely; I remember reading about it, but will have to go back and get the facts. It of course has something to do with commercial raising or processing.

Here's a link to a page from the New York Times on the subject. The mercury levels seem to be a result of industrial waste in the waters, and the fishing industry's resistance to regulations. (What a surprise!) Apparently the bluefin and albacore tuna have the highest levels because they are among the biggest fish...(little fish have some mercury, bigger fish eat them & get more, etc.) The chunk light seems to have about half the amount of the albacore.

Thanksgiving Turkey Gobblers - from Three Dog Bakery Cookbook - makes 24 treats

1 cup ground turkey
2 cups white flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 egg
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
3/4 cup water
2 teaspoons tarragon

Preheat oven to 375
In a frying pan, cook ground turkey, crumble into small pieces and set aside on a paper towel.
Combine flour and cornmeal in a large bowl, then in a separate bowl, beat egg, oil and water, then add tarragon.
Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well. fold in ground turkey and mix again.
Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface and knead until thoroughly mixed together. roll out dough to 1/2-inch thick and cut out shapes.
Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until firm. Cool and serve. KEEP ANY LEFTOVERS IN A SEALED CONTAINER IN THE REFRIGERATOR.

For those who may not know, Three Dog Bakery is owned by the two men who wrote "Amazing Gracie", the best-seller about their adopted blind Great Dane. Three Dog products contain only human quality ingredients, and were the only treats my poodle was allowed when she was very ill during the last year of her life.

The cookbook has a little bit of their story in it, too. They have a lot of great recipes, so I would definitely recommend the cookbook if anyone is into baking for their dogs. And they don't have a Three Dog Bakery nearby where they can just go buy the treats.
