Well it's that time of year to be picking out a tree and start the decorating process. However this time last year, Bella was 5 months old and in an ex-pen and DH was home all day to supervise when she wasn't. So being as she is 60 pds and will climb, hop or knock down any barrier to get to her desired treasure, what solutions have those of you with Bella type dogs done to protect your tree? We always get a real one, and one that stands at least 9-10 feet tall, so there's also the fear of it falling on her too.
The area is too big to pen, and open to other rooms in the house. Maybe a gallon of Bitter Lemon???

It's probably not the most attractive solution, but the year my daughter was walking, yet not really old enough to understand "don't touch", we put the Christmas tree IN her playpen. Worked like a charm...
I wouldn't mind the unattractiveness, we don't have an ex pen or playpen for that matter. She's so crazy, she would hop into it or knock it over. She hops like a gizelle sometimes. Very strange dog!!!
We decided not to have a tree this year :( Wilson + Tree with collectible glass ornaments= disaster. I am doing all of my usual decorating minus the tree. Last year was Murphy's first Christmas and we had a tree but he was 11 months old and well...Murphy was (and is ) perfect:) Wilson is not quite 6 months and into everything, not to mention now that there are two of them when the zoomies hit it gets a little crazy. Hopefully we will have a tree next year. Can't wait to hear what you decide to do and how it works out for you.
That would really be depressing to me to not have one. But you're right, it could be a disaster. I wonder how hard it would be to train her to not go near it? I was even thinking of piling empty wrapped boxes around it, but I know she would just plow through them....or eat them to get to the tree.
I am pretty bummed about it and if we were hosting Christmas at our house this year I would just have to find a way to have one but I just think it will be easier this way. We will be at my mom's house on Christmas.......I just spent a week with her, with the Doods of course, she says she is getting a smaller tree and putting it on a table!!
We have also decided on a no tree Christmas so I have ordered a beautiful garland for the fireplace instead.
Riley was going crazy running under the tree, and i was afraid she was going to knock it down. We just put all of the gifts that we have bought so far (some i wrapped) as a barrier so that she cant get under it.
Hah no , she seems to see it as a boundary! Thank goodness! Our tree was swaying left and right!
I have a little 3 foot Christmas tree that I set up on top of the coffee table pushed up against the window. It looks really nice like that. Maybe you could try putting it up high?? I have no idea how the dogs are going to react to the tree. Sophie was born on Christmas day so I haven't had Christmas with her. I'm guessing I'll have more trouble with the cat though... it will be an adventure.
I have the same problem. Last year Oliver was 6 months old when Christmas rolled around and I decided not to put up a tree, it was my only solution. I did not want any rush trips to the emergency vet. I am not going to put up a tree this year either, he is still way too curious and loves to chew. I put up all my other decorations but no tree :( Sasha is not a problem, she would never touch the tree, probably just sniff it. It really is dissapointing but I would rather have a unharmed doodles than a Christmas tree any day.
