I went to Petland today to buy new toys for my dogs and I walked by the section where they have puppies and cats for adopting. All the cages were empty.I couldnt believe my eyes.So i had to ask an employee where they were,She then told me that Petland is in a transition stage from selling puppies from breeders to only rehoming rescue dogs and cats and to check back in a couple of months to see them all. Then i can pick the one i want..I told her I was just curious and had two dogs of my own.I then thanked her and told her that was a great idea to only rehome rescue pets.I told her that now they were doing some good.I told her i was very happy to hear the good news and that I hope the best for them and the rescue pets. She loved the feedback and thanked me for my comments and opinions.I thought I would share this with all of you. I just got off the phone with petland,Saskatchewan,Canada and they told me that this rescue program is going to be Canada wide. Some of the pets will be instore and some will not.The customers will be screened to the fullest extent and so on.

Our Pet Smarts do this too. And they have dog adoption blitz week-ends as well, but don't keep the dogs in the store on a regular basis.
GREAT! I hope all their stores will do this! About time!
A step in the right direction!!!
Just found this article. It is all Canadian Petland stores!

I hope all Canadians feel very proud of their country! Bravo!
Not the U.S., though. :(
Good for Canada, my second home.
I do feel proud!!
hopefully this means less spontaneous adoptions and therefore less little baby puppies on craigslist.
Petsmart and Petco do not sell companion animals, and both companies are very rescue friendly.
They often give space to rescue groups to adopt dogs. Our local PetCo has a cat area where a local rescue houses some adoptable cats. And sometimes local rescue groups hold adoption days, but PetCo itself doesn't do the rescue. NOT sure how one would adopt one of the cats that is there all the time.
And most likely, the semi was from the Hunte Corporation, which is the largest company that moves puppy mill dogs from the mills to the stores. Many of those puppies on that truck traveled hundreds of miles.
Now, to those who still think that maybe some of those puppies in the pet store come from a nice lady who just breeds a few dogs in her home and doesn't want the hassle of dealing with the public so she sells them through the pet store, let's use a little common sense. Would the nice lady put the puppies in a huge semi to travel hundreds of miles to sit in a store? Who would do this?
Only a puppy mill. Case closed.
Good for you for quitting!
I was curious what would happen if I "googled" Petland. One of the first sites is for the Florida Petlands

It seems as though their business model is very much geared to selling puppies. They make no mention of where the dogs come from but they do have a "three generation pedigree" LOL
