Petland is no longer selling puppies from "breeders" and is only rehoming rescue dogs now.

I went to Petland today to buy new toys for my dogs and I walked by the section where they have puppies and cats for adopting. All the cages were empty.I couldnt believe my eyes.So i had to ask an employee where they were,She then told me that Petland is in a transition stage from selling puppies from breeders to only rehoming rescue dogs and cats and to check back in a couple of months to see them all. Then i can pick the one i want..I told her I was just curious and had two dogs of my own.I then thanked her and told her that was a great idea to only rehome rescue pets.I told her that now they were doing some good.I told her i was very happy to hear the good news and that I hope the best for them and the rescue pets. She loved the feedback and thanked me for my comments and opinions.I thought I would share this with all of you.                                                                                                                                    I just got off the phone with petland,Saskatchewan,Canada and they told me that this rescue program is going to be Canada wide. Some of the pets will be instore and some will not.The customers will be screened to the fullest extent and so on.

Several years ago there was a big controvesy in our community between a pet store (that sold pets) and the humane society.  The pet store owner wished to donated dog food (nearing its expiry date) to the humane society, but they said "thanks but no thanks."  It was all over the papers.  Some members of the community were out-raged that the humane society would "look a gift horse in the mouth."  The HS countered with all the info about puppy mill dogs being sold at pet stores.  Everyone took sides.  The end result:  the community became educated, the supporters of the HS position donated food themselves and now that particular store is out of business.  It was tough for them to do the right thing I think, as they did allienate some people in the community, but I have a hunch it was not the real animal advocates or would be donors anyway.

Good to know, Jared, thanks.

Stories like this make me smile.  But literally about 5 minutes after reading this, I turned on News12 (the NJ local news tv station) and there was a commercial advertising a pet store in NJ selling "purebred" puppies.  The guy doing the ad looked like the sleaziest thing alive.  Ugh if people would just do an ounce of research before walking into these places....

At least in TN they have banned pets sold in pet stores (although I think Petsmart sells birds and fish).  Everyone boycot any place that sells puppies or kittens. BOYCOT.

This must be the direction they are going.... Petland in Pittsburgh has been doing that for about a year(?) now.... I am so happy about this.

Probably because they have gotten into the news a few too many times (at least here) for being the biggest chain store to sell from puppy mills. They did a few stories on them.

This is great news! I hope more US stores do the same.
