I know that many people feel "strongly" about what food their Doodle consumes. I've always seen references from you guys regarding the fillers that are put in Science Diet, Purina, etc. but I had never really taken the time to really check it out.  Well, one of my vet tech friends posted a link with a list of many popular foods that rated each one.  Not that I doubted you, but you all were totally right! That stuff is filled with grains and fillers.  So we went out and bought a bag of Orijen for Brinkley. He'll try it tonight! Yay!

P.S. Brinkley had nice long shaggy hair and I had been doing a really great job brushing him and keeping him mostly mat-free. Well, he swam for hours at day car in a treated pool and it made his fur sticky.  I think the water coupled with the massive amounts of rough play turned him into a matty doodle! :) So it's now winter and he's short haired again.  Sigh :) I love my moppy Doodle!

OH YEAH!!!!

I switched my puppy at 10 weeks. She was on Purina Puppy chow from the breeder. We waited until we had her 2 weeks then switched to Orijen Puppy. The protein / grain / filler content between the two is huge! I did just 10-15 pieces the first 3 days, then went to 1/4 Orijen 3/4 puppy chow for a week. Next week half and half, third week 3/4 Orijen. By week 4 she was on only Orijen. She had no problems, no loose stool, no gas. She had quite a bit of dandruff when we got her. Vet said it was from poor quality food. Since the switch to Orijen it is completely gone, her fur is so soft and shiny. The only weird thing is that it takes much longer to go through her. She does not poop until several hours after eating. She doesn't go in the evening at all so that is a bit weird. Vet said it is not a prob. Good luck with the switch.

Good to hear your experience with the slow transition between two such different foods.

EFAs (essential fatty acids, which are Omega 3 & 6) help with dry coat and skin. Orijen has the best EFA ratio and content of any kibble I have found, which is probably what made the difference in your pup's coat.

Luna would also like to endorse Wellness in case Orijen doesn't work out. She LOVES eating large amounts of food and has very few digestive issues, so we keep her on a healthy grain diet. Right now she's enjoying the Lamb & Barley Super5mix, after she just finished a big bag of whitefish & sweet potato Super5mix. She's not a picky eater (at all), but she definitely seems to be a lot more excited about the Wellness than she was about Blue Buffalo.

An interesting note about the 2 flavors - she definitely smelled "sweeter" and more "woodsy" eating the fish&yam formula than she does now eating the lamb&barley...

It's on my list to pick up a bag of Orijen tomorrow so that I can begin transitioning Max to it. This post was perfect timing. I may have to add a gas mask to my list though after reading all this! :-)

i too  use prozyme for my kitten who has terrible digestion (believe it or not he is 10lbs and his poop is as big as Coopers who is 60lbs). Its great for transitioning diets, and poor digestion

Sadie has eaten Orijen her whole life and she is five now.Not one problem. It is great food and manufactured in Canada

Orijen is also the only kibble I have found that not only uses local sources exclusively for their ingredients, but they provide the exact company name from whom each ingredient is purchased, i.e. the chicken is from Farmer Brown's Chicken Ranch in SuchandSuch town, Alberta, etc.

Just wondering how he liked his new food? We switched ours to orijen 6 fish and OMD they gobble that down! They love it and we would never go back!

Hey Guys!  Sorry for taking so long to update you my. My MAC went crashing to the ground and shattered. It's been in the shop and I FINALLY have it back.

Brinkley is doing AMAZING on the food!  We did half and half for two meals and then gave him Orijen totally on day three... and not a single problem.  He's pooping more than before-- but it's not runny or anything.  And he LOVES it! Brinkley was never a food scarfer... until now!  He chows down on it, licks the bowl and then goes to his food closet and claws at the door because he wants more (we are watching how much we give him b/c the calorie content is so dense.)

And to top it off, I think Brinkley may have had a grain allergy. He was quite itchy. The vet kept saying dry skin... but he's totally stopped itching now that he's been on it for a week. I'm so happy with it!

This is GREAT news!

I'm so glad to hear that Brinkley loves his new food and is doing well on it.

The improvement in the itching is probably not due to a grain allergy; he may very well have a grain allergy, but if that were the case, you would not have seen an improvement due to the elimination of grains this quickly. Most likely, it's the Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids in the orijen that are making the difference. Essential fatty acids have been clinically proven to improve dry skin, itching, and inflammation in both dogs and people. Orijen has a high level of EFAs and the Omega 6:3 ratio is one of the best you can find. I'm betting that was not the case with his previous food.
