This morning Winnie was helping me load the dishes in the dishwasher as she always does.  When she went to pull her head out her collar caught on the rack, and she ended up pulling the whole rack out.  This completely freaked her out, and she started trying to run away with the rack attached to her collar.  This in turn caused all the dishes to fall out and break on the floor, silverware came spilling out, and poor Winnie looked like she was going to die from fright.  Well, I ended up getting the rack off her collar, but not before she squirted her anal glands all over the floor and her fur!  Any idea how to clean the smell from her fur?  Would a regular shampoo take that smell out?  She was just at the groomers yesterday! I wonder if she will stop being so helpful now?  Poor puppy :(

A good cleaning with shampoo will do it.    Poor Winnie!!!    I can only imagine how frightened she must have felt.  I'm glad she wasn't hurt.    I guess she won't be sniffing around the dishwasher anymore.

Poor doodle.

Wow, that is tramatic - for both of you.  I will bet she is a little less helpful with the dishes from now on.  Be proatice and confidently revisit the scene of the crime with her so she doesn't become fearful of the kitchen.

Oh no!  I'm sure that it scared both of you.  This is not a good way to start your day.

Oh Winnie! I'm glad you are ok! That would scare any pet half to death! Hope the bath goes well.

Poor Winnie, what a scare and she is lucky that she didn't get hurt.  A warm bath and lots of TLC and she will be calm and smelling gorgeous again.

Quincy did the exact same thing, he doesn't help with the dishes anymore. He doesn't seem to be afraid of the dishwasher but he doesn't try to clean the dishes. I hope Winnie is feeling better about this experience but you may have to find a new helper with the dishes.

Thanks everybody!  Her shampoo did take the smell out.  I think she was a little offended by the tush scrubbing :)  It will be interesting to see if she tries helping me again.

Oh no, how scary! For the smell, I would use dawn dish soap. Not on all of her, just where her anal glands expressed. We used to use that on dogs that had been sprayed by skunks when I worked in a grooming shop. :-)

Poor Winnie. Vern got the air conditioning grate attached to his collar and he is afraid of everything, but seemed to get over the fright quickly. I think you lost your helper for a while. Sorry about the mess!

Imagine this....she did it again!  An exact repeat of this morning!  I knew she was a slow learner, but I thought after the way she was frightened she'd stay away for a little while.  Twice in one day, when she has been helping me for two years!  I guess the cheese and summer sausage smell on the platter was too much temptation.  But, I will discourage it from now on, to save my dishes, my clean smelling house and Winnie's sanity :)

I Can't tell you how much your post just made me laugh! I can totally see that whole episode play out in my head. I'm not laughing....she's such a cute dog!  Eventually you'll look back and laugh about this all!  My mom's dog did the exact same thing when she was about 11 months old. It was just as awful as your experience, but her dog was so traumatized that she never even got close to the dishwasher again. On the bright side, at least Winnie seems somewhat still normal even if she didn't learn a lesson. I have to admit...summer sausage is quite the temptation!  :)
