About what age did you start letting your puppy go outside to potty by themselves?  Our yard is fenced but I still go out with her everytime.

Tara is 3 years old and believe it or not she still wants someone with her when she goes out to potty. If someone isn't with her she either stays at the door staring in OR walks out into the yard sits down and stares at the windows looking for someone!! OMD!!!  Don't let this happen to you!! LOL!

Monty turned 2 this summer when we put up fencing.  I still watch from the window, thats much better than having to walk him outside in the nasty cold winter!

Could you please ask Monty to talk to Tara?

I have to add that we have to make Monty go outside sometimes.  Kidneys of cast iron I guess.  I'll put him out on the deck and sometimes have to fuss at him to go down to the yard.  geez.

Once the puppy was potty trained.

We have a secure back courtyard and a doggie door that gives Sedona access outside and back in whenever she wants.  She learned how to use the doggie door at a very young age, but didn't spend much time outside unless we were with her.  As she got older, she'd go out and stay out a little longer - sometimes she'd go potty, sometimes she'd just play.  Sedona's now 2 and fairly regularly goes out to potty DURING THE DAY on her own.  At night, however, she asks to be taken out to the side yard - mostly because it gets her attention AND a treat.  She waits until we've settled in for some TV watching, then she "asks" by staring at my husband.  The stare is the same whether she's asking to play ball, have a little after dinner snack, or to go out potty.  If it's potty, after my husband gets up, Sedona runs to the kitchen and looks up where we keep her treats.  That's her "potty" signal, as she knows that if she "goes" she'll get a treat.

OMD! We get the "stare" too!  For all the same reasons.  Only I am the one that is supposed to "interpret" what the stare means! And just like Sedona, Tara starts this once we have settle down for a next relaxing evening. Little stinker!!

Yep, we know the stare too.  Monty will simply stand near the door (sometimes near the door) and then he stares.  LIke we are mind readers......well I guess we have become that!  crazy dog.

Pretty much at about four months old.  I just stood at the door and sent Riley out to 'get busy'.  He looked at me and then went, did his business and came straight inside again.  I now have him trained to stand on the mat while I wipe down his feet when he comes back in.  I never go out with him.

We have a fenced yard, a doggie door and an adult doodle to go out with. Owen started going out alone within a few weeks. He is one year old now. One caveat is that he wants me to walk out to the grass with him at bed time. WTD? He's fine all evening long, but to go before bed he wants company. I sometimes do but most times do not walk out to the grass.

I would say that Rio, my youngest, was about 6 months old, because that is when he was trained on the invisible fence. But I watched him with that fence for about a month until I knew he wouldn't cross it.

I had a small fenced in area for the puppies I just raised and, believe it or not, they would go out on their own, do their business and come back to the door at the age of 9 weeks! I watched them thru the window, but they were fine!

Daisy won't go without one of us with her....she starts to walk out and looks back, if we aren't coming in she comes.
