Hello all.  Yesterday morning, Peri woke up and her eye was shut and all gooey.  I cleaned it up and trimmed her hair around her eyes and then made a dr. appointment for her at 5pm yesterday.

When I returned home to pick her up, it looked much better - not perfect, but better.  I decided to keep the appointment and take her in.  Here comes the craziness...

We were waiting in the room to see the vet (I also had Tacky because we were going straight to see my sis who is in town after).  Kept waiting and there is so much commotion going on - people running, two dogs HOWLING in pain like you may have never heard before (I had not).  Vet tech comes in and apologizes and said there is a medical emergency and only one doctor on staff (weird!).  I say it's okay and wait about 5 minutes longer.  But the noise continues and meanwhile, Peri is crying with her head buried in between my legs. Taquito is shaking and wincing uncontrollably, you get the point.  I had to get the dogs outta there.

i went outisde and asked the front desk if I could leave - and told them clearly the vet had emergencies and ours was not.  The lady looked frantic, but relieved that I offered this and said "there are now TWO emergencies, I am so sorry you had to wait".  I said NO PROBLEM I am sorry you had to deal with us during this!  I hated taking up their time.

Needless to say, that was a painful experience and the vet never saw Peri.

So I posted this for two reasons:

1) I am thankful those were not my two dogs on the operating table last night (I cried for the owners (if applicable) when I left).

2) Peri's eye looked better today, but still had a little goo in the corner and it is not completely open fully like the other.  I am off work at 3 today for....wait for this....12 days!  Should I see how it is after work and what should I look for that would make me want to take her in tomorrow?  THOUGHTS?

Thanks DK friends.  Merry Christmas and Happy Hannakah to you all.

I'm sorry you and Choodle had to go through this, Allyson.

I think that if Peri's eye is not back to normal in appearance by tomorrow, it does need to be looked at. She may have conjunctivitis or some other kind of eye infection that needs treatment. If she were a child, I'd try flushing it with a sterile saline solution, like the stuff used to soak and store contact lenses, so maybe that would be an option for dogs, too. Walmart sells a solution called Equate that's very inexpensive, I use it to store my lenses, and it's safe for the eyes. I don't think that could hurt.

I hope it's nothing serious and goes away by itself.

Thanks K - I am going to try Equate today and see if that helps.

Hi Allyson...

Wow...I don't blame you thinking this was wierd! I do too!!

I'm so sorry that Peri's eye is "not right"...sounds a little like conjunctivitus ( pink eye) to me?  Not sure if dogs get that too?

I do know that pink eye is contagious...so with that in mind...I would take Peri to the Vet and get her checked out.

Now...about which Vet...that's another question!

I'm not sure how long you've been going to this Vet and how much you like him/her?

Not sure if this is a "one time" incident or not...and that's something that you would have to determine.

If this is something that has Never happened before...maybe something came up and they had an emergency with one of the other doctors??  Still it wasn't a good situation...for the dogs or the owners!!

We all know that emergencies can happen...and if they were short a doctor that day...things like that can happen.

Your choice...and each one of us would have to determine how we would handle this decision...

As far as your precious Peri...I would absolutely take her to be checked out...just to be sure she is fine!

Hope all is well...and So sorry for the upsetting visit for Peri...Tacky and for you!

Hugs...and Enjoy your !2 days off!!

Thanks Susan for your comments.

I LOVE this vet - my parents have used them for 25 years and they were the only ones who helped Tacky when he was sick. The normal vet we see is very hollistic and has helped T. with his kidney disease immensely.  I think this situation was very out of the norm and I felt bad for them.

So glad you have a Vet you Love and trust...that's a Wonderful thing to have Allyson...

I love the idea of a Vet being  hollistic too.

You're very fortunate!

Sounds like Peri's eye might be clearing up...that would be Great News!

If not...at least you'll be home to take her in...

So sorry that you all that to experience that.... I would have been in tears too - I just know it!    I also suggest trying to rinse out the eye with a sterile saline... my vet has recommended I do that for Shelby - she's had a couple of episodes of conjunctivitis - which can happen a lot with active dogs (debris in the eyes from playing can start the problem).

I'd say if she's still goopy in the morning - make an appointment....

Keep us updated!

Will do - and will keep you posted!

I have cleared up minor eye problems with camomile tea.  Brew and cool it, and then wipe the eye carefully with the tea. I have also put antibiotic ointment from Walmart into the eyelid with good success.

I have no advice, but I don't like to hear this about my favorite Choodle :) Hope everyone feels better today!

Wait, what's a choodle? is it like a chiuaua and a doodle together?

"Choodle" is both Peri and Taquito together, and it is from Chihuahua and Doodle.

I wouldn't bother with the flushing since tears will usually take care of that. She may have a bacterial conjunctivitis but usually that would look worse on day 2. If you have some human antibiotic eyedrops  you could try that. If the eye continues to look red and gooey you do need to take her in.
