Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I told DH was getting pet insurance, end of story! Going with Presidents Choice thanks to Sherri (Sophie, Penelope and Winston) advice and info.

I have another question regarding pet insurance. When you take out insurance do you need to go for a vet visit to prove your dog is healthy? Thats what DH was told. If so thats another $70 we need to come up with...

Also, Cooper is an Australian Labradoodle - should I put poodle mix rather than lab mix, even though its more expensive?

You can call the insurance company and ask about the pet visit.  I have Pet Plan and the vet visit was optional.  If you did it and had certain things checked out, then the waiting period for certain injuries was waived.

If he was an F1b back to a Poodle then you could put Poodle mix but I think it's fine for an ALD to put Lab mix.  It will be interesting to hear what others think?

For the pet plan I had I had to show proof of his records from birth making sure he did not have any preexsisting conditions.

I have Presidents Choice pet insurance for Sadie and it was recomended by our vet.I got the insurance when Sadie was a puppy and only had to fill out the information but a vet visit was not required.

I really think it is a good thing to have. Our neighbours had a situation with one of thier dogs and it was a six thousand dollar bill and no insurance.

I recently signed Harley up with petplan.  They did not require a vet visit.  As far as what mix to call him, petplan actually has doodles listed.

well good for your Kaytlin.   Its like having children, we want to know that our babies can be taken care of if the need arises. I went 3 years while my daughter was young and didnt have insurance, I think that it aged me many years of worry.  I kept telling myself at this age, it will be ok.  I know that kids and dogs arent' the same but yet they are.   I hope you can figure out the best way to provide.

No, they just call the vet's office for the files. Then if they see anything they don't like they will send you a letter in the mail stating that XX condition is excluded from your policy. That's what they said about Winston's allergies and skin condition, ear infections, and thyroid. Basically, everytime I get something diagnosed, they exclude that illness from the policy but approve the claim. So for example when Sophie had an ear infection, they paid the claim but she will never be able to have another ear infection again. I guess that's more motivation for me to clean her ears more often.

For Winston's seizures I'm going to wait until all the tests are done and medicine is prescribed before claiming. Then they can't exclude any of it.

I really don't understand this. Sophie had an ear infection and they paid the claim. Did they see in the record that she had had them before the current case? Otherwise, if something is diagnosed for the first time I'd think they are then obliged to cover that condition then and going forward.

nope, they paid the claim and then sent me a letter stating that ear infections are excluded from here on out. I think it's rubbish but we don't have a lot of pet insurance options here and the premiums are affordable so I guess I accept it.

if your on the accident plan then you are only covered for the select illness once. If you upgrade to the value plan you are covered for each illness per year. I thought it meant they would pay up to the amount in several different claims until you hit the limit, but I guess not.

That accident plan is one lousy plan, then IMHO.

When I got PetPlan I did have to get the vet to check out the doodle knees and make a note in the chart that they were OK or they wouldn't have covered knees for 6 months I think. Also labradoodle was a breed choice with them.
