When my inlaws got their dog's vaccines they were asked if they wanted the optional leptospirosis shots. I was never asked this by either of the vets we used in Vancouver. the vet here says its good to have if you live in the country or hike alot (we have always hiked and now do live in the country). its not expensive - about $26 each shot, and 2 are needed.

I am starting to do research on leptospirosis and am thinking it may be a good idea.

Does your doodle have the leptospirosis shot?

Kaytlin, I had the same question.  Here's a discussion from a couple of months ago on this subject...

great info there, thanks Jane!

Our vet recommends it because she said they are seeing it more now.

We have it.  Particularly due to our life at the cottage where there is lots of wild animal stuff to get into.

Both mine do. My vet has seen lepto cases in this area.

Yep we get it. Dog park requires it.

Mine get it since there have  been cases in the area.

Yes-both ours get it.

My Ellie LOVES to Swim, So the vet recommended we get her the shot. We Did!! :)

I posted a rather lengthy  response in the previous discussion about Cooper's reaction to his first Lepto vaccination.  I hope anyone getting their dog this vaccination (or any vaccination for that matter) will keep a close eye on their dog the day of the vaccination.   It could have been a fatal mistake if I had taken him home and left him on his own.    Some online say it is the reaction is more common in smaller dogs, but my personal Vet says it doesn't matter the size of the dog.    Some dogs are just sensitive or allergic to a component in the vaccine.

This is a good article that explains how long the vaccines last and that the optimal time to get the vaccine might be in warmer weather because lepto is more prevalent in the summer and the vaccines only last 8-9 months.  It also explains that the vaccines available only protect against two common forms of lepto and they are on the decrease, while there are other forms of lepto on the increase, which are not covered in the vaccine.

I found it very interesting.   Hope you do too!
