Anyone else read this article today?  Thoughts?  I read this article and I really felt for the rescued dog.  This is a dog that had experienced a traumatic event the day before and was immediately thrown into another unfamiliar situation.  Now the dog is being held in quarantine for 10 days.  Obviously noone deserves to be bitten but I think so many things were done wrong.  http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/cutline/rescued-dog-bites-nbc-anchor-fa...

I agree, that woman was just ASKING to be bitten!!! I read in another article about this incident that the dog was being walked off leash and spotted a coyote, gave chase and they both fell through the ice. What if the dog had caught it and what if it had been another dog instead of a coyote??? It sounds like this is another case of an owner with a large and powerful breed of dog with a high prey drive that has little to no control over it. Quite scary really.

Really scary. My worst nightmare.

So Much of it is wrong.  Her sticking her face that close, But the dog seemed very relaxed...So others might have done the same thing.

I hope her face will heal good.

There are more breeds besides Pitbulls that Are known for Aggressive behavior.

It is Standard to quarantee a dog for 10 days to make sure they dont have rabies.

I really wonder if this is the 1st person the dog has bit.

Sorry, I know I feel different then many.  But Me & My dog were attacked by another- Unprovoked, its something you dont forget.

The poor dog!!!!! I think humankind pretty much failed him on this. So much stress!!!

This is unfortunate. There are so many ignorant and negligent parties here.  The dogo is a useful and interesting breed.........if you're hunting wild boar!!!  These dogs are excellent under specific circumstances (like most breeds) but a powerful animal in the wrong hands is like needing an ak-47 for personal protection.  I first learned about this breed in a documentary about the evolution of dog breeds. Lots of families (with kids) own this dog and love it but it is not "just a pet."  It has a job, which gives working dogs a much needed outlet.  That said anything you read about this dog says if you own this dog you MUST take great care when introducing the dog to strangers and ALWAYS let family and friends know they should NEVER approach you or your property without your knowledge. It is scary knowing that anyone can own a dog.

*I think the stress signals were licking the lips, wide eyes and turning his head away*  the fact that his collar/lead were being held so tight didn't help

I guess I can't really tell any stress by the dog either.  Obviously if he had just been rescued the day before from a trauma, he was probably stressed about that.  Then...a person who he doesn't even know was sticking her face in his.  Do we know how old the dog was?  Did he really bite her or was he trying to play?  To me, he looked fine while she was petting him and to be honest, the "bite" didn't look that vicious to me - he's obviously a big & powerful dog, so any "bite" would do some damage, but it didn't really look like he was TRYING to attack to me.  Seems like he would have been a whole lot more forceful with it if that was his intent.  Maybe he is more a bad mannered dog than a vicious one.  I really do feel sorry for the lady.  She obviously felt pretty safe around the dog like they had a rapport going.  I'm sure she really felt terrible that this happened when she had JUST said that she loved dogs.  By the way...I actually thought by looks that this was a pitt bull.  Interesting.  Never heard of that breed before.

In the article, it said she needed reconstructive surgery on her face.

Reconstructive surgery could mean anything even just soft tissue suturing. She is a TV personality so any scarring would be something they would try to avoid.

Really? Just stitches could be called reconstructive? Or even called surgery?

You would think that they would be downplaying the injuries rather than making it sound worse than it is.

Those dogs have some very powerful jaws. I'd think a bite in the face like that could do some damage.

This sounds like more than stitches:

Dyer was rushed to a Denver hospital where she had reconstructive surgery overnight. The 3-year-old dog was taken to a Denver animal shelter where it is being "quarantined."

Video of the attack, as you might imagine, has gone viral, but KUSA has been issuing take-down notices, trying to get the clip off the Internet. (The "Today" show won't even show it.)

Patti Dennis, KUSA vice president of news, said Dyer's surgery was successful, and that Dyer is expected back to work in a few weeks. "The surgeon was pleased with the outcome

You may well be right. But facial lacerations done by a plastic surgeon my involve hundreds of stitches and they need to be left in and the removed. All down time camera wise. Then the scars will be fresh and not camera friendly for some time. Th network certainly does not want reminders of this incident seen.

I certainly could see distress.  But, I had a dog who I had to closely watch for stress.   There all kinds of signs but the eyes gave it to me.  They glistened.  They almost look like the dog is beginning to cry.  I recognized it right away.

I would have loved to have seen video leading up to this incident.  Was there staring?  Were there body language signs. Were the handlers stressed.   They were going to be on TV so I am sure they were.  Even good stress can be read by a dog.  I'm angry they  took a very STRESSED animal to a TV studio to add more stress.  Then they look at the camera and not watch the dog!

Look how the dog bites but backs up right away. It was trying to get away. It was not trying to hurt her as much as get away. It was petrified.  If it was vicious it would have come in further after the first bite.  It backed away.  That is another very important sign.  Does the dog advance or retreat?

In defense of Mastiffs, most are Gentle Giants.  It is confusing because in the Mastiff world there are so many different types of Mastiffs.  Many with different temperaments.  What disturbs me in all situations, and I have read it here many times, these breeds ( pitbulls, mastiffs, etc ) are so dangerous.  Doodles are so kind and good.   Don't kid yourself.  Doodles, when stressed, can bite too. Well heck, ALL DOGS BITE!

Hey, I had a doodle who could bite harder than that dog did in the video. Not just bite, but come out Fighting!

Some of us, who have never been bitten don't show dogs the respect and space they need.  This angers me on so many levels.  The owner that let it wander away.  Not just this once, but many times.   The news anchor who supposedly works with animals in another area.  No one watching this dogs signals.   Not giving it rest and peace.

I blame the dog, yes.  But once it has bitten, well you know the saying.  It will bite again.  This owner needs some freakin training.   Now they have allowed it to stress so much, they may have ruined it. Now this is all it knows. DARN.   So does the anchor and the animal handlers in the video that drug it out to the TV studio.   That lady and her hands.  UGH.  Stop it. Enough all ready with those  nails all over its back and face.  She needs to be cited for hand mauling!  Ewww
