I was amazed to see the Beneful ad for the above product!  Avocado, as far as I know, shouldn't be given to dogs at all.  Still curious, I looked at the ingredient list, and here's the first few items:

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, chicken, soy flour, water

Meat (chicken) is sure way down the list!  Looks like an exceptionally yucky dog food.

What on earth is "animal digest"? It sounds like a magazine, not like something a dog should eat!

Here is the definition of "animal digest" from the Dog Food Project's list of Ingredients to Avoid which I linked above:

Animal Digest

AAFCO: A material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and      undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory  practice and shall be suitable for animal feed. If it bears a name descriptive of its kind or  flavor(s), it must correspond thereto.

A cooked-down broth made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. The animals used can  be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind  of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters,      restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.

PLEASE NOTE: Animal digest is used as a flavoring agent, and it is one of the ingredients in Fortiflora, a Purina product sold by vets as a probiotic. If your vet recommends it, take a pass. It costs three times more than the best probiotics you can buy without a prescription, and contains this garbage.

According to the AAFCO:

Animal Digest - material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed.

I can't find it right now but I remember reading somewhere that animal digest (or maybe it was animal by-products) can also come from 4D animals (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter).
It is all pretty gross stuff

OMD I almost threw up reading about the animal digest.  We visit with friends who feed Beniful and without fail Gavin runs to their dog's bowl to have a taste.  "It's okay if he eats it" they say and I say "Oh no it is not!"

Gavin runs to the bowl because the crap dog food is also sprayed with rancid fat to make it more appealing to dogs.

When I first adopted JD, I was told his previous owner had been feeding him Science Diet. To this day, we cannot walk past a display of Science Diet bags stacked in the aisle of a pet supply store without Jack having to be pulled away from them; he glues his nose to the bags and just inhales.

My vet's office has a Science Diet display, and we were given a bag at Trav's first puppy visit there.  I gave him Science Diet until that bag was empty--just assumed it was okay, since it was in the vet's office!  Fortunately, I'd started reading pet food labels on my own, as we didn't find DK until Trav was almost a year old, so that was his one and only Science Diet bag.  My daughter's dog, the B-I-G yorkie, usually lives in a different city with his dad.  Dad feeds him Beneful.  That Animal Digest stuff is just sickening!!

Karen, I could just see JD with his nose pressed to the Science Diet, and your expression as he did that.  Heh, heh...my laugh of the morning, along with the video.  lol

That old SNL skit needs to go here. I see they are throwing in even more garbage

Your wish is my command, Joanne.

Your link is not showing up for me Karen.  Is it the Bass-o-matic?  That was the one I was thinking of.

Google "Mostly Garbage"...it's an SNL skit parodying Pedigree dog food, and there are lots of videos of it on the web. We've got it here in TFG in numerous other discussions.

OMD, this is hysterical.....but unfortunately way too true.
