I know this is a long shot, but my husband and I are in a predicament. Our puppy has giardia and we just got word that my husband's mother passed away this morning (committed suicide). Both my husband and I are flying out to Seattle Washington from Charlottesville, VA (where we live) to be with family and the funeral. Because Abby has giardia and is only 8 weeks i'm having trouble figuring out what to do with her. Any suggestions? I'm so desperate I even called the breeder to see if she would take her back. I know that sounds horrible to give a puppy back, but after everything and now having to leave for an extended period of time, we aren't sure what to do. Thanks for any suggestions.

My deepest sympathy for you and your family. Have you talked with your vet yet? Sometimes the vet can keep them when they are ill and sometimes there is someone working at the vet's office who is willing to keep them at their home when not at work. Not always the case but worth calling and asking.
Oh, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I wish I could help but I'm so far away. The Vet's office is a good idea. Maybe another DK member in your area can help... I'll keep my fingers crossed for Abby and you and your husband are in my thoughts. So sorry!
What a tragedy...I'm so very sorry for your loss. I would also try the Vet...I'm sure any boarding facility would not take the puppy with giardia.
Oh, Julie, my heart aches for you and your family. The very last thing you need to be bothered with is a sick puppy! I agree with Diana that your vet's office may be the best place to start or a VERY good friend. The breeder did a huge disservice to you by not disclosing the possibility of Abby having giardia and I really will be surprised if she is willing to help you out now. Wish I was closer to help out. Will be praying for you and your family during this difficult time.
Oh no I am so sorry... your family will be in my prayers.
I have no advice as for what to do but the vet suggestion sounds good. I know I would be freaking out and cant afford boarding.
Was the breeder willing to work at all with you? I know my breeder does boarding for her past doodles.... but with the giardia being at her kennel who knows what might happen.
I am leaving for vacation in 2 days and had to find someone to come to my house to play and feed puppy a couple times a day while DH is at work for 12 hours and I felt bad asking and then saying well but my dog has Giardia. I was lucky to have my neighbor volunteer to help and she had a puppy in the past with it so she is not at all freaked out about it.
Julie, I'm very sorry to hear this, how horrible.
I agree that the vet would be the best place. However, this is an 8 week old puppy, and I'm not sure what an extended period means. It might be best for her to go back to the breeder, at least while you are out of town. Did your breeder get back to you?
I'm so sorry for your loss. I agree with the others that your vet might be the best bet.
So, so sorry to hear about this and my sympathies go to you and your family.
What tragic news for you, your DH and all of your MIL's loved ones. I pray that you will find peace and that there is help for your new puppy available. It would seem that the very best place for that pup is back at the breeders. I hope you hear helpful news soon.
I agree about the breeder. I am 100% sure Peri's breeder would have taken her back in that situation - this will only be temporary, right?
And I am very sorry for your loss.
I wish you were close to me so I could help you out! I am so sorry about what you and your family are going through. I would either try to do what you did - actually the breeder would be my FIRST choice. Although this sounds like you are wanting to leave the puppy for good though. Is that what you're wanting to do? Personally, if it was my puppy, I think I would just take the puppy with me. Are you staying with family or in a hotel? You could bring the crate. I know the giardia is an extra thing to worry about, but honestly, if you pick up after the dog & use lots of hand sanitizer, it should be fine. Are you just emotionally overwhelmed with all of it? I'm sure it's not easy. If you are even thinking about getting rid of the dog, now is better than having it get attached to you & then you getting rid of it. Lots to decide. Good luck.
hy not board her and ask your Vet to treat her
then you feel better when you get back t hat she is well and taken care of
