Oh Jennifer I have the same problem, my lawn was once a beautiful sodded plush lawn but that was before Doodles !! Even though "Scotts" said their chemicals are pet safe I do not put anything down on my lawn. The grass has worn away and basically the middle of my yard is a mud hole when it rains. I have been keeping the weeds at bay by spraying just plain vinegar on them of course it kills the grass too but my doodles are way more dear to me than a lawn any day !!!!. I purchased some pet friendly organic fertilizer, it helped grow the sod somewhat. I just don't trust what the chemical fertilizer people say that its safe so I have given up on the back yard - their safety is my #1 concern. Embrase the weeds :)
my old landlord used so called natural fertilizers on the lawn, including the corn gluten, but when i went to the garbage, I found the bags in there, and I could smell something "chemically" which irritated my nose and throat. Even though the packages said natural and kid/pet safe....
I was sure to read the bag on the brand I bought and all natural products in it, it even smells natural :) I don't recall what was in it but I am going to use it this spring. I do a pretty good job of fighting with the weeds and give them a dose of vinegar as soon as they come up. At least my front yard looks good - LOL. I just wish I could have a plush lawn for the doodles to play on but everything is just worn down from the doodle traffic. I chase the bare spots around all season by fencing off small areas but then they run around the fenced area an make a track around the fence - arrrrggghhh. I even tried putting more sod down in certain areas and Oliver was picking up the sod and eating it !!!!
Natural is a good start but don't forget, poison ivy and arsenic are natural too. We all share your pain with bare spots especially after all the rain here last year. Muddy lawns get accidentally dug up, never mind the purposeful digging on occasion.
Living in rural CT, I too just call anything green my lawn. I do a ton of hand picking of weeds and every once in a while I have to use Roundup, but only in the parts of the yard that the dogs have no access to. Good luck!
