I need a dog door and I have finally convinced the DH to put one in. All of the doors that go out to the deck and backyard have long glass in the middle but there is a place in the laundry room where I could put a dog door in the wall (no electrical or plumbing nearby). Anyone have a suggestion for a brand that has worked well for you? Also, I need one that has a way to secure it so someone couldn't get into the house. I think some of them have a metal door you can slip onto one side. Thanks so much.

All I can tell you is that we have one and so does my BIL. His has a double door for colder weather. Ours doesn't have the security door, but we don't lock our doors so it might have come with one. We installed it years and years ago. We really like it!
Do you have lots of gold bullion? And what's you address? TMI
We have no gold bullion! Maybe that's why it's safe to leave the doors unlocked.
;o) And, well, we do have two huge dogs. ??? It's just the way we roll.
I'm glad it's all taken care of : )
I think this is where I ordered my door.
I have it in a screen porch so there is no need for a secure closure but I did have a wood panel made for the rare occasions when I might want to keep the dogs on the porch. I almost never use that but I like the door a lot. The folks I spoke to at the company were very helpful about sizing etc. I think the door is of better quality that he ones I've seen at pet stores.
I have had Hale pet doors in two homes. I just upgraded my current one so that it is big enough for Zach (although I think that he would have been willing to squeeze himself through the little french bulldog sized door forever). They are great . I have had them in walls and i door. Tons of sizes, and ways to make it look like there is no door by hiding it with a dog house type of thing if that is important to you - although probably not since you don't lock your doors!. I can't say enough good things about them. If possible, I would suggest having it installed by one of their installers - I think it then comes with a great warranty.
Our dog door is one that fits into the sliding glass door. It came with a security panel to 'lock' the door closed if we wish.
We also have an insert panel in our sliding glass door with a doggie door. We have a metal shield we can slide in to keep it closed. You can ask at the pet stores and they have catalogs to show you. Also Home Depot has them. There are all types and sizes out there and if they don't have them in stock you can order one.
That's exactly like the kind my parents had that I shimmied through quite often.
I am fascinated, how come you ladies are not afraid of "others" coming in?
OH and Bonnie, seriously, you don't lock your doors...I couldn't sleep at night knowing my door was not locked, can't tell you how many times I've gotten up to check.
We don't have a doggie door but I would love to get one, we just do not have anywhere at all that we could put one :-( Growing up my parents had one for their schnauzer, it wasn't a small one either, and they didn't lock it at all and I can tell you being a skinny teenage girl at the time it was pretty hard to fit through it when I forgot my key but I managed! The shoulders were the hardest part ;-)
The schnauzer on the other side of the door barking made it difficult to use to sneak in if I was past curfew but that is what the bedroom window was for. Oh and Joanne & Spud - DON'T TELL MY MOM!! She thinks I was in my room sleeping :-)
