Does he cuddle or sleep with you? I've noticed, if I settle down so do my dogs. So maybe just lay low, go watch a movie and tuck in for the night. This will keep the dog quiet until you can get him to the vet in the morning.
Recently, our Vern ran through a hedge and hit our stone wall and he started crying. There were no cuts either, but he was favoring his right side. I took him to the vet and she felt it was bruised and prescribed an anti-inflammatory/pain medicine. He was on that for ten days and yesterday, at his routine vet. appointment, she pointed out a fluid like area around where he had hit the wall. (she said a hematoma) We are just supposed to watch it and ice it and look for the area to get bigger or hot, but she said it could last between 7-10 days. In my opinion, I would check the area and make sure there does not feel like there are any breaks/fractures. I would watch him closely and keep him as quiet as possible and call the vet in the morning. If he seems worse in a bit, I would call the ER vet. Hope he is fine in the morning. Maybe ice the area. Good luck!
Oh Vern, you poor big boy...hope your boo boo is all better soon.
Thanks, Lisa! It isn't slowing him down :)
Keep a close eye on him and call the Vet in the morning if you are concerned. I know that little puppies absolutely panic when they get hurt. They instantly act like they are paralyzed and squeal and carry on. They are scared to death and don't know what to do with the pain. A few minutes later they are fine. My Gracie Doodle did this a few times and scared me to death. When my daughter got her puppy I warned her and sure enough, she and Gracie were playing and all of a sudden Luna was on the ground screaming like crazy. They just get stunned and shocked and scared. But, still nothing to ignore. I'm sure. Check his feet and pads carefully to see if something that was hiding in the snow didn't poke him. Let us know how it goes!
Our vet has someone on call so we can call any hour. You leave a message and they get right back to you. He or she will tell you what you can give for pain. I know what my vet says is ok, but your vet might not approve and the dose would be based on weight. Give them a call, they are there for you.
Thank you all for the wonderful advice. I'll keep an eye on him and maybe a cold compress as well. I'll keep you posted as to what the vet says tomorrow.
Poor little doodlebug, hope he is feeling better this morning. Please let us know.
Awwww poor baby, he probably just scared himself but I like to stay on the safe side of the fence so I would take him to the vet anyway - you never know !! Keep us posted, I am sure he is OK. My girlfriend has a mini weenie dog and Rosie is a screamer - you can look at her the wrong way and she screams - LOL. My GF is the nervous type and when she gets scared and nervous so does Rosie which make matters worse. If you stay calm so will you baby.
I sure hope your Doodle guy is doing better this morning. Please keep us posted.
