Ruby is coming up on 8 months and starting to act super independent. She doesn't lay near me anymore while I watch TV, preferring to lay out of the room near a wall in the dining area. It may be silly of me, but I really miss my velcro dog. She's not completely dismissive of me, but I'm usually the one initiating the contact, e.g. I will go to her, pick her up and bring her back to where I am on the sofa. She does follow me anytime I'm near the kitchen, but that's only because she reveres the kitchen, the giver of all things tasty. She's still incredibly sweet when she hasn't seen me in awhile, but I miss her longing to be at my feet in the evenings. :(
I've read online that female dogs tend to be more independent and moody, while the males are big clingy babies. I wonder if this holds true in the doodle world as well.
What about your dood? Does he/she hold true to this stereotype?

Thanks for the reply, Elizabeth! That's what I'm hoping: she's just hitting the teen years and discovering her independence, but will return to her clingier self down the road. She's still affectionate, but it's usually me initiating the affection, not her. She does still love to greet me, even if I've been away for only a short time, but when we're just chilling around the house, she prefers to lay off to herself instead of at my feet. It is a drastic change from her former, younger, self.
I'll keep you updated on her teen years. Heh. :)
I don't know whether it's possible to generalize but I have always had a special bond with my male dogs and Riley is no exception. He's not following me around all the time but he is frequently coming for cuddles and is very close to me indeed. He comes for cuddles on the bed before sleep and in the morning and sleeps under the bed during the night time on my side of the bed. His cuddles are the wrap around, get as close as possible kind : )
Awwwwww. Riley, you are a sweet, sweet boy! Perhaps, I need a second doodle: a male. heh.
Bailey is a nice balance. She will lay on the dining room for a while then come up to me and push against me with her butt to be petted. Sometimes she sleeps with us and sometimes she doesn't
I think it has to do more with age for us. Now that she is 10 months old she realizes it is ok to be away from mommy for awhile...
This is a good description of Sadie, too--she can be off on her own sleeping in another room for a while, but then she'll come find me for pets and love. She sleeps on the bed with me, but almost never starts out on the bed. And in the yard she is completely independent, but at the dog park she checks in sort of often and always follows me right out when it's time to go.
That's Knox exactly!
She does somewhat, she is not clingy but she does prefer to be in the same room with me or DH at all times....sometimes on the other side but sometimes close.
On the weekends she does prefer DH, probably because she is with me ALL day EVERY day otherwise.
Annie can never get enough love, she will take any kind of hugs or loving over any food or toy. Annie doesn't miss anything, very curious and just plain nosey. If I change one thing in the house, while she is outside, even the smallest thing, like move a lamp, she will notice immediately when she comes back in. As long as Ashley knows where her beds are, her toys and Annie and I, she could care about anything as trival as a lamp being moved. We have a doggie door and they can go out anytime they want, Annie will go out and walk around the property alone all the time, but Ashley rarely goes out alone, when she does she keeps one eye on the windows, to make sure she can see Annie or I inside, soon as she loses sight of either of us, she is racing back in the house. Ashley needs to know where either Annie or I am at all times. Although unlike Annie who can never have enough loving, a few minutes of loving for Ashley and she is off to her toys or balls. Both are spayed.
Peri is more independent than many other dogs I have had. However, she follows me around in the house - she hates being cuddled with, but is everywhere I go pretty much (or my husband). I still think she is very independent though. My chihuahua is a male and is that perfect velcro lap dog. But he's a chihuahua....
This question has been brought up several times. I too thought that females are less affectionate than males. Again, that's only from my dogs that I have had. Tori was very aloof in the beginning. Now she is more cuddly and will snuggle up with us (I think I just gave her no other choice - lol), but still when she's had enough - she's had enough. My male golden NEVER got tired of cuddling - almost to the point that we would say "enough already" lol (I miss that now! )
I would definitely get a 2nd doodle! Get a boy! I absolutely love Bexter's velcro attitude. I said when I got him that I wanted him to be the kind of dog who will follow me everywhere...one that I will trip over...well, I got my wish and I love it! I wanted a dog to want me and he does! The breeders told me about males being more loving & I can't say, but holding true for me anyway!
