This time of year I get itchy fingers. I buy plants "accidentally" all the time. I used to buy a lot from catalogs and still do. I also but some things from our better local nurseries. But if you want good buys on things that have become more popular or widespread, you can't beat Home Depot. They often have smaller shrubs and nice trees for much less than you can get them elsewhere. Even though now I sometimes get help in planting, I prefer modest size shrubs and I let them get established and grow up here. It's kind of like getting a puppy instead of an adult dog.

Last week I stopped by Home Depot just to see what was in. Four shrubs, some freesias, my first elephant ear, some Milky Spore Disease powder, which kills Japanese beetle grubs, and a few more things made it home.

I bought a cold hardy camellia for $20. I must have spent four times that on the two I have had for some time. For a gardener there are never too many. It is gorgeous.

I also just downloaded an app for my phone  so you can scan the smart codes showing up on plants among other things. Then you can read more info right in the store.

The camellia is second from the left, isn't she pretty? I saw camellias at the NY Botanical Garden for $68.

F. - you and I would be dangerous together! Oh the things I bring home. I had one camellia some time ago that just didn't make it and I thought it was maybe too cool here, but it's encouraging to see that you have them! Off to Home Depot I go! : )

I have one for years now. I planted the two I have next to the screen porch thinking they'd get some protection and they have gotten very big and are filled with buds that are starting to open. The one I just bought is rated for -10F so I think I'm just going to put it wherever I find a good spot. These are some old pictures of the two that are established.

Just wanted to tell you that I found the Camellia at our Home Depot! Hopefully it will grow as nice as yours have!

Oh, I am so glad. I think it should do well.

I'm still waiting to buy my plants for planting with Natalie.  I hate buying plants.  What do you suggest...the light is not particularly good on the west side of the house where the planters are.  I don't care if they are annuals or not.

So sad, one of my great joys is buying plants : )Wait another month at least unless you want to plant perennials. You could throw some bulbs in now just for fun, hyacinths, daffodils and tulips if you can find any or just put some grown in pots in. If you get the dimensions of your planters we can help you more readily. The easiest thing in the world is to plant a batch of small impatiens when it's warmer and watch them take over the world. They don't mind some shade and come in many colors. You could plant some variegated vinca to hang over the sides, mine comes back every year both in and out of planters. The impatiens even self seed sometimes. Here's the vinca, see the new growth starting?

Do I need to maintain them besides watering?

The good news is no. A little fertilizer when you plant , something like Osmocote would be good. They also have products of a gel like substance that you can dig into the soil well. It retains water so you don't have to water as frequently. Just get plain old impatiens, they come in 3 or 6 packs or flats. Cheap too. The New Zealand ones get leggy and drink like fish. If you don't water enough they keel over with regularity.

In the shade, I love Impatiens. They come in all colors and I planted some myself with my sons when they were Natalie's age.

Adina, another idea is planting a tree.  When I was eight, my mother and I went together to pick out a tree for our new home.  The tree, I picked, was as tall as I was at the age of 8.  Now, 21 52, the tree is still there every time I pull into my mother's drive.  It really is special to me.

Sometimes with two-year old child, they are not patient enough to plant an entire flat of flowers and soon become bored.

The draw back of planting a tree is that there are no immediate visual gratifications.  But it is an idea.

But not for the planters: ) A flowering spring tree would be lovely. I am very partial to redbuds. I have bought this one at Home Depot for a son and I love it. Of course I spent a lot more on the first one I got : )

NO trees.  We have more than enough.  We got rid of our cherry tree last year.  Seriously, I've said it 100 times if I could have nothing but lush, green grass....I'd not need a SINGLE other plant =)  But since I have raised porch planters that is what I'm planting in. Only flower suggestions, please =)
