Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Axl started limping & holding up his left paw the other night so we took him to the vet b/c we thought he twisted his paw during one of his romps around the backyard. Xray came up clean but the bloodwork they also ran came back positive for Lyme Disease :-( We had him vaccinated and my husband is diligent about applying the Frontline. How does this happen? He'll be on antibiotics for 30 days. What happens after that? anybody else have this problem? The internet is a scary place to read about symptoms and such...

Two things. In theory the ticks have to be attached 24 hours or more to transmit the disease, not sure why. Also how long before the doodles eat the guineafowl even if you are allowed to have them where you live? That said I don't spray for ticks and we do have them. Maybe I can train the doodles to develop a taste for them : )
F, guineas are brave (read stupid) birds! Our friends had about 20 of them patrolling their farm for rattlesnakes. So you would not only eliminate ticks but most other creepy crawlers as well. Here's what you would have to contend with though:
Let me know how it goes with the tick eating training! :)
This is one of the most darling videos! I love that lab's ears as she is trying to eat with the hen between her legs. Such a sweetie.
Bonnie she really is amazingly patient! I was trying to think of how Tara might have reacted. I think she probably would have been afraid of the bird and just let it have her food! How about your doodles?
I think Kona would be like Tarabear and avoid the bird completely, but Owen would engage in play for sure! I doubt that bird would get any of Owen's food. He's always up for a good time. haha
Ha! That Owen is such a little rascal!!
His life is a party! except at night. If Kona goes outside and barks at something, Owen bravely stands in the kitchen barking as he looks out the window at Kona.
He's no fool!
Yep, Charlie would have been at the door saying "let me in - there is a big bird eating my food"!
LOL! Maybe that's how these birds solve the tick problem. The dogs are too afraid to go outside!
Now that is funny, I love when the guinea hen goes under the dog. What a tolerant dog. Somehow I don't think my dogs would partake of the peaceable kingdom idea. One of the dogs did bite or scratch a tick off a couple of months ago. Maybe it just let go. I found a grayish black pearl like object on the floor. Lo and behold it was an engorged tick. I doubt the training for ticks will proceed much further.
