Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Okay, I'm loosing it but what a better place to loose it than DK.
With the increase in popularity of some breeds of dogs the increase in pros and cons occur.
Take for example the increase in demand for Dalmatians after the movie, 101 Dalmatians, was released in 1996. Many of these dogs were found to be over bred and not the great family pets as once thought. Many dogs lost their homes when families found they had to train them or this was not the right dog for a family, or " I bought the dog for my children but found they do not take care of the dog", etc.
Now with Doodles we are all witnessing the increase in popularity, BYB, adoptions, and posts that have become heart wrenching here on DK of those looking to re-home their dogs. Expect to see more.
On to my point-CHICKENS.
In my area, and across the country, designer chickens are becoming a culturally popular animal to get and place in the backyard. Cities in my area are now faced with voting on Chicken legislation.
Students and residents at Kent State University lost their battle to keep chickens in the yard. Nearby, the City of Green, will allow the chickens but no roosters. So no eggs. My other son complained his professor talked more about his chickens than he did instructing his class. Last week, a family member talked on and on about his chickens and how trendy they are. All his friends were getting them. In my area, it is everywhere. It is a fad? Designer Chickens.
I wonder if there are ChickenKisses.com? I wonder if Petfinder.com will have 1/2 million chickens for adoption?
The above Chicken, BETTY, needs a fenced in yard, another chicken to keep her company. She also has fears the sky is falling... the ad reads on.

I feel the same way. My father once took us smelt fishing, which is the least sportsmanlike "sporting" activity I have ever seen. They threw big nets in the water, stood around talking for awhile,, and then pulled up the nets full of these tiny fish. The fish were placed in buckets of water and the nets got thrown back in for more. My sisters had a fine time taking the fish out of the buckets and talking to them, making up names: Herman, Marsha, etc.
Later that evening, imagine my surprise to find that I was expected to eat Herman, Marsha, and company.
Smelts still repulse me.
No problem for this old farm gal. We raised all of our food, including the meat. When my Dad butchered chickens, he usually did ten at a time and we had to clean them before school in the morning.
- My mother grew up on a farm - as a little girl it was her job to kill the chickens needed for dinner. She would pick one out, catch it by grabbing the feet, turn the chicken upside down, place her foot (bare) and the head and yank! Broken neck. Her dad would chop the head off and she and her sisters would pluck it.
- My older sister was attacked by a chicken while visiting my grama's house when she was about 8 yrs old. She still has the scars - chickens don't cuddle.
- I've been around poop - horse, cow, pig and chicken - NOTHING stinks worse than chicken.
Jane, that would make you mom a chicken groomer. :>)
LMAO!
My mother talks about the horrors of plucking chickens. Awful. So speaking of that, I used to say, " I'm going to pluck my eyebrows" Of course, I was corrected by her ( as usual )
"Joanne, you pluck a chicken. You tweeze the eyebrow"
I used to pluck chickens and clean them out with my mother. Somehow I never minded doing it though I wouldn't do it now even if you paid me good money. Your story just reminded me of it. We always prized the eggs that had no shell found inside some of the chickens and added them to the soup. We also stuffed the neck skins and sewed them up.
Love that classy lady. I still tell Calla to put a wiggle on.
This same chicken killing/plucking (or maybe turkey killing/plucking) story was told by my grandfather at the dinner table EVERY Thanksgiving. Often the story would evolve into a pig slaughtering tale - at least until my grandmother, ever the lady, would say, "Now Dwight, hush".
Maybe instead of ChickenKisses. com it should be called Henpecked.com. I think I'll stick to doodles they are so much more cuddly and dare I say have more personality.
Ha. It could also be a place for certain DHs to gather : )
Name names....LOL!
Don't you think I have any common sense discretion?
