Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Today started off good. I have been waiting for a reply from NC State, but know it may take time. I went to Hurleys Dermotogist to ask them about programs out there. I am looking for a program where they can take money directly out of my husbands paycheck. He gets paid 2 times a month. Where the surgery can be paid for up front and then an automatic withdraw each payday out of my husbands check. We are willing to do anything..show paystubs to show how much he gets and that he has been with his job for 8 years. We just do not have the money up front, but we can pay in payments. The thing is, we don't qualify for a loan or credit card. (yes, years ago we got into some credit card debt), but it has been a long time. We have learned from this. Now it's haunting us.i am going to send an email to PETA tonight and our local humane society to see if there are programs that will do this.

Then the call from my primary vet. He said the biopsy says that the cysts are stating that they may be in the brain. I do not have a copy of the biopsy yet. The call came in late this afternoon. I am picking it up tomorrow. He said that he cannot do the surgery, which I was told only 3 can do it. He mentioned that he would not invest in the money because they may come back. They are congenital cysts. That surgery can be done, but they may come back. I am devasted. He said this is so rare but it has happened. He said that when the surgeon goes to take out the cysts they may be so deep they can be in the brain. He told me to get in contact with the breeder to let her know what is going on. I got off the phone with him and called back Hurleys Dermotogist. I got a woman I have been in contact with since his biopsy. She stated that yes, they can come back. She said that he is still healthy and happy. These cysts are not bothering him. They will soon if not removed. They will get large enough to cover his eyes. She said that he is only 1 year old and to give this a try. Get these removed. This is just so much info coming at me. What if they go in and start the surgery and find out they are deep and growing his his brain?
I am so sorry...this is so long. I am doing the surgery. I am screaming out to everyone and anyone to help me find a program out there..! I am going to write to the Doodle messenger very soon. I need to know the exact amount of this surgery. Thursday cannot come quick enough...I am getting ready to write PETA..thank you all for listening to me. I love my dog so much...he loves me. he lays beside me keeps giving me five, licks my tears and can't understand why I am so upset....

Praying for you and Hurley and your DH. This is all so devastating. Please keep us updated. We want to know. I'm just so very sorry.

I wish the news was better Regina.  We will continue to keep positive thoughts for you and little Hurley.

Regina, I am so sorry and my heart is just breaking for you and your family and Hurley. This is just so crazy!!  Here are a few links to organizations that might assist with funding for Hurley's care. Have you thought about contacting the ASPCA or Humane Society for referrals to organizations that can assist you?

I am keeping you and Hurley in my prayers. Please keep us posted. Blessings!

Oh, Regina, I am so sorry about all of this. It sounds like Hurley is not in pain which is so important.  I will pray that you can find the funds for surgery and that the cysts are not deep.

Regina, I am so sorry you have had this news from your veterinarian. I know this must be confusing and devastating.

I would encourage you to continue with the dermatologist and following up with the NC State vet school. In most cases, veterinary schools have the funding to buy new and high-quality equipment that can be very difficult, if not impossible for a small practice veterinary office to afford. If you are not able to find a veterinarian who can do the scans locally, perhaps they can be done at NC State. You can also have access to multiple specializations, which might be hard to find in a local small animal hospital--like dermatologists, and surgeons, and neurologists, etc. I would advise you not to move forward with the surgery until you are in touch with NC State.

Did you have a chance to mention the NC State option to the dermatologist? If he or she graduated from there, perhaps he/she can make a connection for you, or help you get a faster response.

Do you have the primary vet's diagnosis in writing? Including the part about the cysts being congenital? This will be important to provide to your breeder. Perhaps you can get the required second opinion from a specialist at NC State.

Others here have given you great advice about Doodle Messenger and Pet Care. I just wanted to suggest, if you haven't already tried this avenue, a credit union, rather than a bank. They typically require you to open an account, with a membership fee of $25 to $50. But, because they are a financial cooperative rather than a traditional bank, they can be more helpful with loans and check cards, which work like pre-paid credit cards. I have banked with credit unions for many years, have financed cars with them, have had signature loans and credit cards, and have had a great experience.

Regina, you are taking some very positive steps, and you have already learned a lot about helping Hurley. I know today's news is not what you wanted to hear, but don't let it discourage you. It's one opinion. Keep moving forward with your plan about Doodle Messenger, Pet Care, NC State, and the rest.

With all our prayers and good wishes coming your way---

Elizabeth

Elizabeth, YOU ROCK!! Thanks for giving Regina such great advice!
Yes..it says in biospy that is possible congetial. Yes, my Dermotogist went to NC State. He did not tell me that, but the women at the front desk said he did. He knows that I have wrote NC State and will meet with him Thursday to discuss the option of maybe NC State could take this case. I would be willing for them to give Hurley surgery. Then the vets get experience, and I know there will be specialis there to oversee the surgery. I am hoping that I will get a response from this school.. thank you for your reply ;)

I hope you hear from them soon. Having those different specialists all in one place, so they can easily consult and coordinate his care, can be really helpful!

I hope your meeting with the dermatologist goes well tomorrow.

Regina, like Elizabeth said, please don't get discouraged! Hurley is counting on you to make the best decisions possible for him! We are all here to support you thru the not-so-fun times ahead!

Wow, what a day for you and Hurley.  I commend you for being insistent that you will find him the care that he needs.  Stay positive.  You have gotten lots of great advice here.  I sincerely hope that through some portion of it you can find what you need to help Hurley.  Keep us posted.  Until then we will hold you in our thoughts and prayers.  Hurley is a lucky doodle that he ended up with you.  Hugs.

Oh Regina, I am so sad to hear this, I am praying for you and Hurley.  Its so heart breaking when our beloved pets are sick.  They should be able to do a MRI to see if there are any cysts on his brain.  I know the MRI's are expensive but that will be able to allow the doctors to see exactly what is there (if anything).

Sending doodles hugs to you !!!

Regina - this is just so scary but listen  DO NOT give up hope - I'm praying, we'll all pray, for Hurley.  It sounds like you are doing the very best at finding the best opinion on how to proceed.  Try to focus on that - then once you have all the facts you can decide how to proceed.  Any vet or specialist will then give you a ball park guesstimation on costs.   Ask them if they are willing to set up a fund to raise the needed money - if there was a way to donate directly to the vet then I will gladly make a donation.  April 5th is my Stuart's first birthday - I'll donate to Hurleys care the amount that I was going to spend on Stuart's birthday gifts (which he only will destroy) and a cake (when he'd prefer a shin bone anyway).  I'm sure that there will be other's on DK willing to do what they can, we all look out for each other and our doodles.  Stay strong.
