Now, I know you cant believe everything you see / read online, but I saw this and thought id pass it on incase it is true.
My MIL has some chicken jerky from China (she got it as a Christmas present, I warned her and she knows not to give Cooper any) that has the code 772. I have some cat treats right in front of me from the US with code 669 - neither are on the list below

(ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!
With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products.
Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.
How to read Bar Codes .... interesting!
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!
The whole world is concerned about China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan .
This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the
public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 FRANCE
40 - 44 GERMANY
471 .... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK
BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number.
We need every boost we can get! Pass this on to everybody on your E-Mail Contact List!! )
I also found this link that explains
"A similar bar code system is EAN (European Article Number). It contains 13 digits and also indicates the country in which the bar code was registered. Read the first "3" digits of the code to determine this.

So this must not be the entire list of barcodes, because that 772 on those treats your mom has is not on this list.
I'm going to have to go look at some barcodes, lol!
I have food and treats with barcodes that begin with "7", and I know they were made in the U.S.
What makes this even more complicated is that a product might be made in the U.S. or Canada, but the ingredients are imported from other countries.
I would still have to double check this. For the experienced shopper you know what you are looking for. However, let's say my Mom went into the store. She would see that sign and just pick up whatever was there. Who knows when someone has placed something down on the rack that doesn't belong there. I also went into a new store here the other day and asked the guy for Made in the USA chicken Jerky. He said all of our Jerkey is made in the USA. Instead of just believing him, I started reading packages and they were all Distributed by USA companies, not necessarily made in the USA with USA products. It is so incredibly frustrating. We bought a dehydrator and have been doing our down chicken and sweet potatoes.
I did some investigating on the net and found this....just FYI.
One way to help determine a products country of origin has been found, and it is all related to the barcode label or UPC code. On any product, the prefix to the barcode, those little black lines that the cashier scans, can reveal the answer.
For example, an American or Canadian based company will have a barcode prefix of 0-9, while a possible competing Asian based companys products would have a barcode label prefix of 690-692.
Although these barcode prefixes do tell you what country a company is located, even if that company is located in China, they might still manufacture from anywhere around the world. This means that all that the barcode prefix can tell you is origin of the company, not point of manufacture.
For the entire list of barcode prefixes, please visit GS1 US’s official website, and stay alert with where the products in your house are from.
So, it seems we still do not know for sure!!
I shop at a small, privately owned pet supply store whose owners do the research for you. They simply will not carry any food products made in China. You would think their prices would be higher than the bigger stores, but they are not. In fact, they are a few dollars cheaper on some of the foods than Pet Supplies Plus.
I might have to add Chicago to my list of places to travel now that we are retired and I can stock up at your store while I'm there. This dog food/treat stuff makes my head hurt!
It would be a thrill for me to escort you to Bentley's Corner Barkery, lol!
Interesting info-it's very scary out there!!
