So after a fantastic day at the dog park with Shelby and Knox and after picking out about a bajillion burs from his fur and bathing him in a gallon of shampoo, Ollie was completely wiped out. After his bath and us napping, I noticed his paw pad had a flap of skin on it. It didn't bleed at all, and he was so tired that I didn't think it really even bothered him. Today is a different story. The dog is pitiful. He doesn't want to stand let alone walk. The flap of skin came off (he either chewed it or it fell off) and he looks at me like it's the worst thing in the whole world. I have to bring him his bowl of food and water and practically drag him down three, yes three, flights of stairs to go potty. I have put neosporine on it and right now I have a sock on him so he won't lick of the ointment. I plan to wait and see if he is still this sad tomorrow and if so I'll take him in. Is there anything I can give him for the pain? Is there anything I should look out for? It doesn't look too bad...it looks kind of like a popped blister. He is either a wimp or in a ton of pain. And those boots are now on my shopping list.

Ahh, poor baby. I don't think there is anything else a vet would do, just keep the are clean and keep him from licking it and he should be fine. Paw pads seem to heal fairly fast. Quincy blistered his pads once while playing on ashphalt, to the point that they did bleed a tiny bit. I kept his activity low for a few days and he was fine.

Thanks Donna, it helps to hear this. Hopefully a night with the sock on will help start that healing! He is so bummed about it, that it has me all concerned. I tried looking at to make sure another bur wasn't stuck in their too...He wasn't happy with this plan lol, but I did not see anything. Blisters! Ouch! That's not fun at all!

Yes, I had the same experience when Murphy hurt his pads.  The Vet cleaned and medicated it, and then bandaged it up.  After a few days he was fine.  I sure hope Ollie's feeling better soon.  Murph was a total "drama king" when he had this.

Ollie is great now (for some reason I am just now getting all these notification that you guys replied). Like Murph, Ollie was being a bit over dramatic about it. I was all concerned and then two days later it was as if it never happened! I'm sure glad they heal fast!

Glad to hear it.

There's something wrong with the notifications. I'm first getting them from comments made on Monday!

Poor Ollie. Jack's had some major paw pad injuries. The biggest concern is keeping it clean and dry until it regranulates. I'm not sure about using ointments, there is a danger of infection, but I don't think you want to keep it constantly moist. It needs air to help it heal, and ointment also attracts dust and dirt to the wound. We were told to soak the pads in water with epsom salts added, and then dry thoroughly. I did put socks on him when he went outside.

Jack's pads were completely torn off, and he was in a lot of pain. We were also told to restrict his exercise to potty walks only until they healed. They do regranulate amazingly fast.

Thanks Karen! I'll keep it dry tonight while he sleeps then! Should I keep the sock on so he doesn't lick it? I'm hoping it's a quick heal! I hate seeing him mopey! Poor Jack! It's not fun when they can't walk!

I left it uncovered in doors, but Jack wasn't licking it. I think the air can still get to it with a cotton sock.

Poor baby....Ollie you look like such a sweet boy.  Get well quick and keep your sock on!  It's for your own good:=)  Jake has had to wear a sock for the past week to keep from damaging his ear while scratching due to an ear infection.  I've been finding the sock everywhere but on his foot:(

Ear infections are not fun either! Is he feeling better?

Trav had some kind of injury to his foot recently--the pad was swollen and he kept licking that foot.  Talking about the sock makes me laugh--I put a sock on Trav's foot and he was fine with it, but as soon as my attention turned to something else, the sock would come off.  He'd still be lying in the same place, same position, but the sock would be a few inches away from him.  I never actually saw him pull it off, though he managed to do it several times.  Hope Ollie will feel better soon, poor little guy.

I love that he was still ornery in the midst of it! Ollie is too sad/annoyed to flick off the sock!
