vomits after eating

Hello

I am starting to panic...Shiloh was injured about 6 weeks ago he jumped up on the fence and the fence post impaled him under his front leg.  He had surgery ~ the dr. cleaned, stitched and put in 2 drainage tubes.  It has taken 4 -5 weeks to completely heal.  He was on antibiotics for 2 weeks.  He started vomiting after eating and at random times when he was on the antibiotics the dr. assumed it was caused by the medication and he should have been fine once the medication stopped.

However Shiloh is still vomiting after meals.  His food, schedule, water...etc.. has not changed.  He is eating Taste of the Wild (our other doodle is fine).  It is not happening after each meal but at least 4-5 days a week.  Sometimes after breakfast and other times after dinner or maybe both meals.  He is acting fine, loves to eat and drink, no diarrhea and is playing.  He is vomiting within a few minutes of eating.

Before his injury he never vomited/was sick.  This all started after the surgery and medication.

I have tried no kibble and feeding rice, plain boiled chicken.  I have added in plain yogurt and/or pumpkin.  Any thoughts????

 The Vet is no help ~ he is making me more frusterated!

Lynn, I am fairly certain this is not a food issue.

Did they do any x-rays or ultrasounds when Shiloh was injured? If not, I would insist that they do an ultrasound to be sure there is no internal injury. If the vet is unwilling or unable, find another vet, perhaps an internal medicine specialist.

In the meantime, try giving him probiotics. The only relationship between the vomiting and food/meds might be that the antibiotics depleted the good flora in his GI tract. But that usually produces loose stool more than vomiting. I really doubt that he would still be nauseated from the antibiotics weeks later. Make sure he is staying well hydrated.

I hope it's nothing major, but in light of the injury, I really think you need to rule out any internal damage.

Yes the emergency clinic did X-rays and everything was OK.  I am wondering if he could have an infection???  I don't like this vet and I am in the process of looking for a new vet in our area.

 

I am going to start doing 3 or 4 small meals a day and see if that helps.  I will try the probiotics.  He is drinking plenty of water.  Once he vomits he is perfectly fine ~ hungry but playful.

 

I know Diamond had a recall on some of their foods from the SC plant but I called and spoke to the Rep at TOTW and she said that the food was made at the same plant but should be fine.   I would think if it was a TOTW problem all of our dogs would be getting sick not just Shiloh.

An infection is a possibility, but I don't think that would cause the kind of symptoms you're seeing. I don't know, though. An intestinal infection might. Blood work might help pinpoint things, too.

An ultrasound will show soft tissue issues that aren't visible on an Xray. I really think you need to talk to a vet who will take this seriously and help you get to the bottom of it.

I don't think this is related to the Diamond recall. But to be on the safe side, you might consider getting another bag of food. Then you could at least eliminate that possiblity from your mind. Guessing can be the worst part of having a sick dog; you need some answers. Even if the smaller, more frerquent meals help, that won't tell you what's wrong. My Jack was vomiting and having to eat small amounts of food several times a day, but there was an underlying disease causing the problem. It didn't go away permanently from the dietary changes. And a dog can be very, very sick and still act normal and playful. Jack was very sick, and he still wanted to play ball and eat.

Not trying to frighten you, but if there is something wrong, it's important to treat it before it gets worse, and if there isn't, that peace of mind will sure help both of you.

Ditto to Karen.  If you can't get your vet to cooperate, try another.

It really doesn't sound like an infection but some kind of GI tract problem, perhaps a blockage of some kind. Shiloh does need a good workup. Could he have swallowed some kind of object?

No he eats nothing odd unlike my other doodle ~ she will eat anything!  I am leaving this evening for a week George will watch him and I will take him back to the vet as soon as I return home.

Lynn, This must have something to do with the surgery. You are doing all the right foods for sensitive stomach (boiled chicken, rice & pumpkin). I would go to a different Vet, but demand all the surgery info and X-rays (pre and after surgery) from the emergency clinic. I am not sure where you live. I could post in my other big epilepsy group EPIL, if you like? We have hundreds of members from all over the States and somebody might be able to recommend a GOOD vet in your area?
