Current Recall Information

I ran this idea by Karen this morning and she thought it would be a good idea, so...

This discussion is for current recall information only. In the interest of staying informed without unnecessary panic please try to verify with a credible source that the information is fact. For posting recall info. please open your reply with the brand/manufacture name. Additionally it would be very helpful if you credit your source or any others you find pertaining to it and to include the date the information was released. I'm glad to hear that your local store is being so accomodating; this is one reason I like to patronize smaller stores that actually have an owner who cares about the customers.

I have another question...this is the first time for me Inam going through a dog food recall. How do you know when it is safe to buy the food again? Jacks flavor food was not actually recalled but we will be needing to buy food soon. Are all,recalled bags off the shelf now?

I don't know how a recall actually works....did they shut the plant down?

We can only go on faith in what we are told by the companies involved. Supposedly, no foods that are manufactured in the Gaston plant are being sold currently. My understanding is that they are going through the plant to be any and all traces of contamination are removed.

Since Jack's current food is not involved in the recalls, it may still be on the shelves.  My Jack's is. I am still going to keep a copy of the dates for the recalled products with me the next time I buy it.

I just called Natural Balance while both the Chicken and Duck ARE manufactured at this Gaston SC plant they were Not made during the time of question so that is why they were not recalled.

I was also told Natural Balance has. Test and hold policy and Not One of the products even recalled has shown any issues.


I still don't like the fact the chicken and duck are manufactured there but I guess the fact that those favors were not being made then helps....still unsettling .

There are recalls and there are recalls. In this case, there is very little if any danger of a dog being harmed by the food, even if it tested positive for salmonella, which to date, none of them have, not even the ones that are on the list. This is very different from recalls in the past, where pets had become ill and even died from substances in the food.

Also, (and this doesn't apply to your situation, but good to have the info here), everyone needs to understand that the stores are responsible for pulling recalled products from the shelves. The manufacturers are not going to send people to the store to get the food. So we all have to know which products are affected, and not just trust that if a bag is on the shelf, it's okay. This is one reason I would not buy food from warehouse stores, even to save a little money. The smaller the store and the more conscientious the employees and management, the better the chances that they are reading and following directives regarding recalled prodcuts.

I've copy/pasted my comments from another thread regarding this recall.  

Well I'll be darned!  What were the odds? I bought TOTW on April 30, it was not on the recall list at that time.  I knew that Diamond Pet Foods had Chicken Soup on recall so when I dumped the new bag into the plastic tub at home, I clipped the Production Code off the bag and tossed it into the tub too in case other brands or other issues came up.  

Today I finally checked, OMD!  Yep, I have one of the suspected bags.  I purchased from a Petvalue store.  I have my receipt and the UPC.  I gave them a call and they offered me a full refund, without the bag!  

The guy at the pet store said everyone is going crazy and they aren't being very nice to the store people.  In all that I have read, I have not seen that any dogs have gotten sick???  Just people, right?  And in that light, salmonella I think that most dogs wouldn't have problems with that?

You are right, Sharon. Any danger is to humans and dogs with compromised immune systems, like my Jack. But I'm still using the food. Switching would do him more harm right now than the infinitesimal risk from the food, since it is not included in the recalls.

I have just shared the following on our facebook page and wanted to pass along to anyone who may be interested. Please keep in mind that although this event thus far is out of the SC plant clearly Diamond has a very high tolerance for turning the other way.

Susan Thixton also put out two articles yesterday. Specifically the timeline of occurences including Diamonds timeline for responding along with the very sloppy reporting and accountability.

In regards to the sloppy reporting and accountability I am referring to the botched reports of numbers and then the needed corrections because the wrong information was given.

I do not know if you caught it or not but the Diamond expanded recall now includes food that came out of the Missouri plant.  Not looking too good :(
