I have been reading about the soft cones...do you think that it will work for him? Is there still a way for him to reach his incision site with the soft cone? The one he has is huge and long...I have to help give him water from his bowl and feed him...it's long so he won't get anywhere near the incision...
When you are talking about the soft cones...is it the ones that are blown up..look like a doughnut?

We thought about the soft cone for Trixie ( like the one in Andreas photo) dh even went to the store to buy it...But he was worried that since it wasnt 'see through' it might be worse for her...just a thought.  The cone does seem pretty firm- thinking he wouldnt be able to bend it & get to his incisions.

I know others have used them & really liked them....maybe if it doesnt work for him & you can see that right away- it may be returnable?

I read about reviews for the blow up one & most people did not seem to like them.

Yeah...the doctor said that he thinks Hurkey will rub his head on the couch or bed or wall....darn near anything!! He said that the cone he has would prevent this from happening...I just do not like it...he hates it....
The surgeon gave me some sedatives...so at night when he has it on the longest amount of time he will sleep...

Sounds like you should follow the surgeon's recommendation. Rubbing his head on things sounds likely to happen otherwise and you don't want this messed up.

I think you had better work through it with the cone you have...seems like he could get to his head with a soft collar.

I understand the difficulty Hurley might have eating & drinking, but if it isn't otherwise freaking him out, I agree that it's probably best for him.
It seems a soft one would certainly allow for rubbing. I have a feeling you and he both would hate having his incision site reopen or worse yet, get infected from rubbing on it more than you hate this collar he has now. Just saying.....it's only for a short time really.

i think you need todo the  dreaded "Party Collar" for this. oN another example;  I'm taking DH for surgery tomorrow for a bone spur on his Achilles.  Maybe I'll be looking for an appropriate collar! He is not a gentle giant and I always equate him to being 10 years old (as all husbands are) LOL  Personally, I'm gonna drug my guy as long as I can get away with it.  LOL  Take care, we love Harley!

I am thrilled he is home!!!!

I haven't had the need to use either but do you think it would help if you cut some of the bottom off that would allow him to get to the water and food bowls (that is if you have raised bowls). Charli uses this bowl and I think that if I cut some of the bottom of the cone it would work.

I would go with his current collar rather than the soft one.  My lab has had three knee surgeries, and while the cone is not fun, it does protect them from themselves.  Ten days seems like an eternity now, but it will be much worse if he is able to somehow open the incision and complications arise.  Hang in there and make the sedatives your new best friend :)

We used the blow up kind after the boys were neutered. We got the Kong one as it was stronger than some others and if not made well, dogs can bite and puncture them.  It worked very well. They could see and it was soft enough to sleep in if needed but made it very hard for them to turn, bend far enough and lick.  However, I don't think it would do anything to prevent Hurley from scratching his head against the bed, wall, etc.  There just isn't anything sticking far enough out to prevent it.  Even if it did, it's inflatable so a relatively strong dog could push against it and get close to a wall, etc.  My thoughts but others may have had different experiences.

I think Hurley could scratch his head on furniture with these. Stay with the big plastic one.
I vote to stay with the big plastic one. I would worry he could scratch his head with the soft one.
