NEW SHOW: Did anyone watch the new CBS show Dogs in the City? I was really looking forward to this show, I thought it might give good tips on how to train your dog. The host of the show, Justin Silver is billed as a dog psychology expert - not sure how he came by this title. He is an ex comedian. The show was so disappointing. It just didn't give you any tips besides what is common sense and basic dog training. I'll give the show a few more episodes before I completely give up but it is not looking good.

END OF AN ERA: In other dog show news Cesar Millan announced this week that this will be the last season of The Dog Whisperer. I know Cesar gets a bad rap for some of his methods but I've learned a lot from his show. I think the biggest being the state of the owner directly effects the dog and consistency in training is key. I really enjoy his show even if I don't buy into every aspect of his methodology. Millan is working on a new show called Leader of the Pack "dealing with the important issue of dog abandonment and finding homes for unadoptable dogs."

MY WISH: I wish there was a dog training show that led you through activities you could do with your dogs to build the dog / human connection. I'd like to see basic obedience, tricks, sports and everything. They could have different guest trainers from all over the country. I really like watching Kikopup and Tab289 on YouTube. I love animal shows on TV because they are so mindless. You don't have to keep track of the characters, the plot line is obvious and you need no background knowledge. You can even miss the entire first half and enjoy the end.

GUILTY PLEASURE: I love shows with animals and people that live in rural areas. Some of the shows I like are, Call of the Wild Man, aka Turtleman, Swamp People, Rattlesnake Nation and Animal Cops Houston. My all time favorite guilty pleasure is Duck Dynasty. OMG I can't tell you how much I love this show. It amuses me to no end. I would love to spend the day with these people. Have 21 minutes? You can watch Duck Dynasty online HERE.

QUESTION: Do you have a favorite animal related TV show? What is your guilty pleasure TV show? Have you learned anything valuable from watching a dog training TV SHOW?

I did see the show or parts of it. I also could have given the advice he was giving and I don't consider myself anything other than having common sense. A funny thing about dogs watching television, my daughter's two dogs when they hear a dog bark on TV will run into the room behind the TV looking for them. I am amazed each time I see it.
I saw dogs in the city last night and found myself talking to the tv because it was so frustratating and stupid! There was no training involved and he never discussed his methodology, just that he can speak to dogs. I'm not at all sure what he did in the segment with the little princess, driving around in her stretch limo with her bulldog who acted like her dog was more important to her than her new baby. Come on, making a baby wear a sweater so you can keep the house cool enough for your dog? Could you just hear Victoria or Cesar with that one?
I have learned a lot from both their shows and just don't see anything valuable in the new Dogs in the City show. Besides, I just can't relate to city living like that anyway, so there probably won't be many similarities to my dogs situations to relate to.
My guilty pleasure TV show is Greys Anatomy I'd guess. American idol and So You Think You Can Dance run close behind, I just record shows and watch on fast forward most of the time. I watch tv to either learn something or just be mindlessly entertained, and Dogs in the City fit neither of those criteria.

I watch all the dog training shows, and although some are better than others I always seem to take away something that I can use or is at least "food for thought".  I find it interesting that the new show is set in NYC.  It certainly is more challenging to get your Doodles the exercise they need.

I totally agree, you can always take something away.

I agree that Dogs in the City is very lightweight. I think the guidance he gives (what he says) is sound, but he doesn't show enough of what he actually _does_ with the people or the dogs. Doing three different cases per episode contributes to this issue. His point about the people being the problem, not the dog, is amply illustrated by the idiotic owners featured on his show. (Not all are idiots, but some are spectacularly so.)

I was aghast when the model or whatever she was dangled the bulldog's toy over the baby--then, seconds later, the bulldog lunged to grab on to the toy when the host held it. The owner seemed to have absolutely no concept of what a bulldog was designed to do, to grab onto a bull's nose and hold on.

The way these people enable their dogs to endanger their children is appalling and possibly criminal.

We have watched Dogs in the City and have been so disappointed! It seems to be more about the guy's personality than dog training. I enjoy watching dog training shows because most present very interesting training techniques. This one was not good. I will probably watch it again though because there are dogs in it. ;o)

I agree with everyone's comments about dogs in the city. I was really disappointed with it. Did anyone else. Office the doodle in the intro?

Sad to here the Cesar will no longer be on. This past season was not so great. It might have to do with a lot of his personal issues be was going through

There use to be a show on, only one season I think, it was on Animal Planet and it was From (something) to (something), darn it I can't remember the actual name. Anyway the premise was a group of people, a trainer, a groomer, a carpenter, and some dude that was just sweet, would rescue an abandoned dog from a shelter and find it a new forever home. Loved it and then it never came back. DH and I were very disappointed.

Guilty Pleasure Shows: Housewives of New York, New Jersey and Orange County - love to hate those gals and then a spin off of the New York Housewives - The Bethany Frankel shows, love her baby so much...she is so darn cute and looks just like her Dad

Was it Underdog to Wonderdog?!  Loved that show!

Yes that's it, I can't believe it didn't come back, so disappointing.

I agree with you regarding "Dog Whisperer". Owner's presence, state of mind and consistency is crucial. I'm also a fan of Ceasar's pitbull name "Daddy", who sadly passed away :(

Like me, Chewie is also a fan of many animal shows (this extends to animation of dogs like Alpha& Omega and ScoobyDoo too)  This is Chewie watching "Breed all about it"

My Wish: Something like a play-along/sing-along show for kids but for dog training. A"Train-along"?  Each episodes can be about new things like obedience (from basic to advance), tricks, agility, search&rescue, therapy dog training, dog behaviour FAQs, grooming  etc... Would love to do something with Chewie in front of the TV...trying new things each episode :)
