Hello!!! i am about to go out today and get my Chloe a new collar or harness. It is now kind of urgent as lastnight i took her to my sons soccer game and she was just so excited about all the kids that she pulled so hard her collar buckle came undone! didnt even know that was a possibility.
She is now 4 months old and weighs approx 23 pounds, and what i really need is something that i can have more of a handle on her when she is in this obnoxious state of mind (oh gosh i sound like Cesear).
She is generally a great walker and only ever pulls when there are people she "Needs" to see! at which i am trying to figure out the best solution to fix that little problem aswell:)
Leaving soon for the pet store so i hope i get some ideas in time!
Thanks everyone!~

Ouch, these charges are awful.
I wonder if you would be able to order a brush and ship it to a DKer in the US and then have that person send it to you for cheaper than $25.
I even went beyond that and I bought the SMALL and got a couple packs of extra links. Worked GREAT!
So i have given in and bought a prong collar. It is not the Herm Sprenger but if this works out i just might have to pay 25 dollar shipping and get her the side release one. It is kind of a pain in the butt taking the links apart to get it on her but, better safe them sorry!
My husband and the person at the pet store both recommended she get the medium and didnt listen to me of course when i said what about the small one. So i took the medium and took her for a walk right away. It was HUGE! i had to take 4 links out that left like 3 links left and it looked ridiculous it was just so bulky and weighed her down! When i got back from the walk i made my husband go right away and exchange it for the small (why cant they listen in the first place, it sure would make There lives easier ) haha
The small one fits perfect around her neck without taking links out and doesnt weigh her down, i just have to order more links for the small for the future, and she walked AMAZING! She was always a good walker but i was obviously wrong, because there was a 100% difference especially since i have now switched my walking technique from laid back "do what you want as long as you dont pull" to " stay beside me " and she is doing a wonderful job at it. The big test is the jumping ill be able to test it out for that on monday at the soccer game.
But she didnt pass a minor test on her walk yesterday a couple was walking by, and she was just getting started to jump and as soon as i gave her a correction she looked the other way.
The only thing im worried about is if she gets so excited at the game that she ignores the prong collar dont want her to be just pulling and it hurting her i was told a sharp jerk "not strong though" was all she needed but that a constant pull isnt good.. .is this true?
Glad to hear you got a prong collar. Isn't it amazing how well it works? She should learn quickly that if she pulls you are going to give a quick correction. My Bailey still gets all worked up when she sees certain dog friends and pulls.....so I have to correct her a couple times. There are times when she is just too excited so I have to walk her away from the situation .... and we try again.....and sometimes again..... and again. Training is hard work! It is so cool when it finally "clicks" and there is progress. Good luck and let us know how it is going!
I'm glad you're seeing an improvement already. Yes, you are correct....a quick tug on the leash should send the message, although you may need a couple of these corrections in high distraction situations. You would not want to use the prong collar to restrain.
If the sit doesn't work out too well, you can put her in a down/stay and stand on the leash so it is not as easy to get up. I found the down/stay was more solid than a sit/stay...
Catch her with a correction before she is all the way at the end of the leash. Then you won't be giving her a jerk while she's already pulling. Do you say anything when you correct her for inappropriate behavior? If you do say it for doing things that are just NOT okay...and then give her a command for something she KNOWS how to do so you can practice that with the consequence of a correction or reward.
So far we have only been on walks with the prong so when someone was walking by us today she went to jump while walking and i corrected her right as he feet left the ground, so should i put her in a sit when walking if people are approaching and wait for them to pass or is this acceptable.
Finn isn't even 5 months yet, so he isn't a pro at commands like heel or stay but he is great with sit, so if someone is walking close by and I see his tail start going and butt start shaking (which means a jump or bounce is coming) I put him in a sit until they pass by and give him praise. If I think someone is likely to approach to pet him I definitely put him in a sit right away and bend down to pet and talk to him and keep him in the sit then I can praise him for it. If he breaks the sit I correct him. I also shorten his lead when we pass people so that I can give a proper correction. It's not as effective for me if he is pulling the leash, I can't do a quick or proper correction when it is. I also cross the street sometimes to avoid someone petting him since it can get overwhelming when there are a lot of people! It is getting better and better everyday for sure.
