Its the first time I have seen this show..I don't watch much TV, but my DH saw it and called me over to watch it. I liked it, and the Doodle was adorable..such a typical Doodle Stella is, and looks SO much like my Chloe!
Where was that discussion? I would like to read it~
Here is last week's thread. What bothers me about this show is how dumb it makes NYers look. :(
I wish nobody else was watching it, either. It's already caused a few people to join the DRC website tonight looking for one.
The power of TV : )
That segment showed a typical family that would eventually rehome the doodle or dump them in a shelter if they didn't call in a trainer. As usual, the family is the one that needed training. The father was wrestling Stella IMHO in an almost violent way. Allowing the kids to smack Stella with a toy in the face? To allow that little girl push her doll stroller into her and then chasing her when Stella tried to get away? I wanted to jump through the TV. The saving grace to that story is that the trainer did his sidebar and said 'I get so mad when children are allowed to treat a dog that way. It is because of behavior like that is what gets dogs euthanized because the kids friends will be chewed on same way and their parents will say that their child was bitten'. At least the mother had the good sense to call a trainer!!
I saw it as well and knew that it would generate a conversation here. I wish there was a way, and I haven't gone to look so there might be, but it would be an excellent video to have on here and on the DRC site to use to talk about why so many doodles get rehomed! So of a what not to do! Stella was an adorable doodle but I agree the Dad needed smacked. One of the first things we were taught in basic obedience was no rough playing like that. Sometimes when I'm out on a therapy visit someone, normally a guy, will start playing in a similar rough manner with Sophie and she just backs away from them looking at them like they are crazy.
This was just the kind of family that shouldn't own a Doodle....or any dog. They were clueless and the fact that they were allowing those kids to mistreat that beautiful, sweet dog made me crazy. I hate shows that make it look like two quick visits from a trainer solve all the problems. This dog was a typical young Doodle full of energy (that wasn't being drained through exercise). I would like to think that the family was now educated enough to appropriately love and train the dog going forward, but I really don't.
I did notice that. This dog was going to need a LOT of work. I don't think this trainer's method for teaching heel is simplistic and I really doubt that they will see much progress. Putting a dog in a sit and giving a treat every three steps....really?
