Cooper has never been tested for heartowrm, and has never had heartworm preventatives. It was never mentioned by the vets in Vancouver, or by my new vet in Ontario (though it was winter when we saw him). Sherri (Sophie and Winston) mentioned heartworm preventatives to me a while back, and it seems that Ontario is a hot spot for it. So I got Cooper an appointment for testing and to get preventatives for July - October.
We just got back from the vet ($173 lighter). The test has been couriered out, we should get the results tomorrow or the day after (im not particularly concerned). However, the receptionist did give me the option to take the preventatives now or wait til the results come in. I took them now (will save me an hour round trip to get them) but I did check that they were returnable on the off chance that Coopers test comes back positive, as she wouldnt be able to have the meds. She said yes, but I can give her the med now, she could still have them.... I thought it was dangerous for a heartworm positive dog to have heartworm preventatives.... thats why you have to have the test done, and get a prescription if you arent buying the preventatives from the vet...
We have Revolution (if it makes any difference)...

Wow, that far! Amazing. I suppose, I just think, if my relatives from Ontario can come down in 4 hours, so can all of Ontario :)
ok, by the end of this week I might be ready to move to Canada. They are talking triple digits here by Friday!
I don't think you'll escape the heat if you come here in the summer months, unless you want to move to the far north. It gets ridiculously hot in Ottawa. It was almost 40 celcius with the humidity the day I moved. It is not all snow shoes and polar bears here ;-) We get quite a temperature range through all four seasons.
That being said, I'd take a triple digit any day over -30 with the windchill and buried in snow in January.
I'm with you. I'll take blistering heat over bitter cold any day.
I am spitting distance of the States - literally a 5 min drive to the Michigan border. We have had very hot and humid weather - I have only been bitten by 2 mosquitos which is amazing as they seem to hunt me out and have a dinner party (and Im allergic) plus theres a stream running along the back of the apartment. but aparently it can get pretty bad here (black flies too)
The meds also prevent fleas and ticks which I definitely want - we had an infestation of fleas a few years ago and it cost us a small fortune to get rid of them (2 cats, dog, and house)
Im wondering if maybe Cooper will not have to have the test next year... I wont be using preventatives all year round as its definately not needed, just June - Oct
Okay, so since we determined you are close to Michigan, it may be less expensive to give all year round. Safer also. I do here. Those litter buggers can be found even in December sometimes. Most of us do in this area.
I suppose that is between you and the vet.
Agree to disagree.
I prefer to never have to vaccinate or medicate, however that is an ideal world.
To give 3 months of pure poison and almost kill the dog trying to get rid of Heartworm,at the cost of $2,000+, or a $5.00 pill once a month and never get the disease. Not the best choices, but the only ones we have.
Everything is a tradeoff. Everything. This one, I'll take the preventative, monthly.
The problem is that nobody has anything until he does have it. I didn't use flea or tick preventatives with my last dog and she never got fleas for 14 years...until she did. And boy, was that a nightmare. I am sure it hastened the end of her life.
$5 pill????? Its $20 (plus 13% tax) for 1 Revolution here in Canada. But still...
I only plan on giving it June - Oct, it gets pretty cold here in winter (Sault Ste Marie)... and the price of testing Cooper each year ($80 plus 13% tax) is cheaper than paying for meds every month. plus it gives flea and tick prevention too which is a big bonus
My vet recommends June to November. Personally, I feel like it should be May-October (mosquitos were out early this year). I have never seen a mosquito in October, let alone November. At least not in the city.
After the 10 days of temperatures in the 80s in March here, the mosquitoes came out very early and in full force this year. There were mosquitoes all over by early May. I rarely get mosquito bites, I guess I'm not sweet enough, and even I was bitten.
Here is something Jacquie Yorke posted some time ago. I believe there is still a shortage of heart worm treatment medication. The American Heartworm Society recommends year round prevention and that's what I do.
