How to avoid burned grass from doodley pee?

Hi all,

Ok, so after a ton of back-and-forth e-mails with a cottage owner, we secured a cottage rental for a week in August! Their policy is "no dogs" (hence all the e-mails), but we were able to talk them into letting Lola stay (she's basically a human, after all :) ) I'm a little nervous about her pee. Our backyard is covered in burn stains, and I'm thinking if their flawless land has burn patches at the end of the week, we might get charged a repair fee.

I've looked at previous posts about this, but the last one I could find was from 2010. Are there any new products out there that can help us out? Or are we going to be stuck chasing her around with a watering can all week? I'd rather not put chemicals into her body, but if there was some natural way to decrease/neutralize the nitrogen in her pee, just for a week, that would be fantastic.

We have much newer discussions but nothing is new. Don't try to change your dog's metabolism, ph or urine in any way, please. If you can't find a good spot then watering can chasers are the best idea.The recent discussions probably are in the Garden Group, join us. Here's one.

In keeping with the "hose 'er down" consensus, I'd suggest hooking up a sprinkler.  It might be easier than catching every squat (I don't always see when/where my dogs go).  You could even buy a sprinkler timer and have it run a couple times each day.  Could be a win/win - no worries about urine burns and the cottage owner ends up with a nicer lawn than he started.  We have less of a problem with brown spots when our lawn is being watered or it rains a lot.

Sue, I have found the watering down of peepee spots to be a daunting task, as our Murphy was trained to go out very frequently from the get-go and we were home too. But this past year we learned he can hold it longer and it made it easier to hose down 4-5 pee-pees than 8-10 a day. So maybe taking her out less can help. Regardless, we haven't found the water technique to be very effective, but it's worth a try. We probably don't water enough so that lends me to think a bucket of lake water ain't gonna cut it. Our sprinklers go on every night and we still have spots. But we have two dogs too.

The trick is that you have to water the area immediately after the dog pees. Definitely a daunting task.

That is the trick, it needs to be quick before the sun gets to it. So that requires a lot of coordinating of puppy peeing and watering everytime. And how much water is enough? Too much work for me. I just don't see the spots anymore...I still think training Lola to pick a less delicate potty spot would be my first choice.

Every time Lola pees I would hose the spot down with water.

Hi.  I just laid down new grass in my yard.  YES hosing down the spot with water is a pain, but it does work.  I have read that the watering needs to be done immediately after pee for best results and it should be 3x the amount.  I leave out a bucket or two and refill after I have used it.  Try to get her to go in the same area of the bucket.  It will make the task a bit easier on you.

I would really trya nd get her to a non grassy area. It is so hard to catch every pee with a bucket of water.
