So...I was talking to a friend who does all their own vaccinations. The only reason they take a puppy or there dog to the vet is if something is wrong, but when it comes to their own shots they do them themselves. Wondering what others think of this? It saves a LOT of money. They do take them in to get their rabies shots but other then that no. Just wondering what some of you think about this. We are thinking about getting a buddy for Schulz and wondering if we can skip the whole vet thing....well other then the puppy wellness check. But do our own vaccinations. We do that with our horses just never thought about dog.

Of course : )

I agree if you are a medical professional.

Vets of course vaxxinate their own pets.

I have taken my dogs to the vet for shots and given them myself.  My mom has alpacas and it is common practice for alpaca breeders to give their animals annual vaccinations and bi-monthly sub-cutaneous (sp?) worming injections.  It is no big deal for us to give our dogs shots, and our vet will even provide the vaccinations for us to do (you can also purchase them at various farm supply and co-ops).  I get my dogs their annual physical when they get their rabies shot.

This past year, we got all the shots done at the vet's office.  My daughter was taking the dogs to 4H and they wanted records of all the shots - not just rabies.

I understand the logic of maintaining a good relationship with your vet, but we have always received excellent vet care even without a relationship.  Our main vet is also a farm vet and she is 30 minutes away, so sometimes we visit a local vet clinic for ear infections, rabies, etc.

And, yes, I would vaccinate my own kids.   :-)
