Well, I made a comment in the Photography Group about buying a new smart phone since Verizon, my carrier, is switching data plans and, of course, things will get more expensive if I wait to buy a new phone. I need to do this before the 28th. It started lots of comments, some of which may be of more general interest.

There are days when I think I'll go back to a dumb phone that only does what a phone is supposed to do. But I do sometimes use the camera. I do use my phones GPS and occasionally I look something up. I do not</ strong> text. If I want to communicate I call and speak to the person or leave a message. How quaint.

I will copy others my and others comments as replies and maybe we'll have more of a discussion.

Nope, no other phones.

See update.

Glad to hear you love your new phone.

Thanks Karen.

You ever take one of those drives where you just GO?  Last night, coming home from Lake Erie, we decided to take the back roads through Ohio.  No big deal, we both used to drive, are certainly not directionally challenged and had some time to adventure.

It was dark.  It became darker.   Really Dark.  It started with the Amish Buggies with Solar lights for night driving. I knew, if we were on that road we were out there   :)  And we were.

We had taken the GPS out of the car so we did not have it with us... still no worries.  But... when a Medium sized Black Bear was in the road around 11:00 pm ( I've never, in my life, seen a Black Bear in Ohio)  again, I knew, we were out there. After the Black Bear, I started to wonder.

Pulled out my Smart Phone--Very Smart Phone and found we were rather EAST of where we were supposed to be going.  Still that did not bother me. At least I knew, we were on a road, that was going to take us somewhere.  Waking up on an Amish Farm, or hitting a Black Bear in the road was not what I wanted for the rest of the evening. Thank You, Smart Phone.

You can get Google navigation on your phone and it's great and free.  Glad you all survived. So you're going on a road trip?

We've been on them daily. Road and water trips.

P.S. Just used the navigation trip that came with the phone.  I'll look into Google.  It would have helped to know where I was when I saw the injured/dead bear in the road. Truly, we saw it at the last minute and if we would have hit it, we would have lost control and flipped.  I wanted to report the severe road hazard. I had no idea though were we were.  I did report it later, but... who knows.

Glad you like your phone.  I love my phone.. maybe too much.

Do u pay for navigation. Verizon wants money every month, no way.

Don't know. Never used it.  I just wanted to know my location.  Also, while up north, I did locate a dog -friendly beach and used the navigation from DogGoes.com ( an app ) to direct us to the beach.

So twice in one day.  I'll have to wait and see now what the phone bill will be.

They should tell  you, before you press the button--A charge applies.  $$$$   But I should know by now--A charge always applies!  LOL

I just checked my phone and it was google maps that came with the phone.

Google maps is good. Mine can take the location info by voice and a new nicer voice on this phone gives you directions : )

Ahh, very nice.  Always good to have. Here, I thought I would NEVER use the feature  : ) Never say, Never

If you don't have a smart phone you can get the Verizon navigator service and pay for it each month.  If you have a smart phone, just get one of the apps for navigation and they work just fine. No need to get the pay Verizon Navigation service if you have a smart phone.
