I live in a one story house, no basement, no stairs. Pebbles is 3 1/2 years old and has never climbed one stair. At the end of the month we are going to visit my nephew who has a two story home. Will Pebbles have a problem climbing the stairs? I thought if I go to the top of them and call her she will go up them. Do they figure out stair climbing on their own?

I am from Michigan too and when we moved down to Florida last year this was the craziest thing to get used to! I lived in a 3 story house in Michigan and we don't have a single step in our house now. And I don't remember EVER seeing a stair out on our adventures, and the girls go everywhere they are allowed with us. Flat is right.
Yeah, there have to be stairs somewhere out there!
Being that I have lupus and fibromyalgia along with two meniscus tears in my knee, I don't go looking for stairs!! But there are no stairs anywhere when we go for walks. We don't even have sidewalks!!
I do like Jane's idea of putting a treat on each step, she is a treat hound so I'm sure that will work. Hopefully she will follow my other dog, she was 5 years old when I got her, and she lived in a house with stairs. Thanks everyone.
I think she will get the hang of it quickly. Good luck!!
I think each dog has their own take on stairs. When I first got my Sasha she was terrified of stairs. I live in a ranch house but you need to walk down 3 stairs to get out to the back yard. So when Sasha was a baby I would carry her, then one day I realized she was getting heavy and had to learn to do stairs. She learned in a few days with me coaxing with her fav. treats etc. She learned going up much better than going down. When I got my Ollie @ 11 wks old. he mastered the stairs up and down within the first hour of coming home - go figure. My Sasha is going to be 3 yrs old and has yet to go down the basement stairs which is 6 steps !!!
Well that's not encouraging Barbara!! I am hoping since she never leaves my side for a minute she'll take to them right away because she has to be by me. Otherwise my nephew will have to carry her!
We still lived in Michigan when we got Soph and we had plenty of stairs in our house there for her to learn on and get used to. Our house in Florida had no stairs and our Weim Jade (who we got in FL) had never been on them until we went up to Michigan to visit my parents when she was about 6 months old. She is my velcro pup and followed me up no problem. She got a little stuck coming down the first time, but she was just fine after that.
Heres Jade's first trip down the stairs! :) (sorry its so big!)
I think Pebbles will be just fine with the stairs!
Cooper was very unsure of stairs when she was little but got used to them (we too lived on one floor so we took her to the nearby school). now she is just fine with stairs, though she still doesnt like the kind of stairs that arent solid.
