What a story--this is a good example of people who are dog lovers vs. people who are JUST dog owners--very inspiring--and upsetting too! Be warned! BUT it has a happy ending!!

OMD!  8 freakin days. What the heck.  Ever hear of 911?

High altitude frying his brain?

Message Sent to Anthony.

I tried appealing to his vanity by telling him he could redeem himself in the public eye if he does the unselfish thing.

Well that was a real smart thing to do, good thinking. Though in my eyes no redemption. My least favorite line of his: "Missy got a second chance, now I should get one to".

I agree with you completely, Lisa, but you catch more flies, da da da...and this guy certainly more closely resembles an insect than a human, now that I think of it.

As far as I am concerned, he should not have a dog.

slow by slow carry?  Go back?  Okay, there are so many ways.  Long slow haul back home. Got a cell phone?  911?  Have a tarp and tent?

Make one of those 1st aide gurneys.  So many ideas.

I would never leave my dog. Never.  I die with him.

I would leave my dog if need be. No need either of us would have to die I hope. I've thought of it when we go on very mini hikes. But I would of course immediately get help to go back and get my dog. Hey I'd need help if Calla fell and broke something, heaven forbid, in the yard. And I wouldn't take my dog to someplace like that mountain without any provisions/precautions. Of course I would also tell my dog I'd be back soon like I do whenever I leave. : )

I did notice on his FB website that he is on a mountain top surrounded by kids--apparently he had a child with him that day who may not have been his and that was his top priority--but of course, he didn't go back and didn't try very hard to get help. End of story.

It also raises the question--if this guy is enough of an idiot to leave a dog behind for dead, should he be bringing children anywhere? Much less to the top of a very high mountain!?

The children in the FB photo are not his. He does have one child, but there were no children with him that day. The person with him was described as a "teenager".

I didn't think they were his--I guess I am getting some Sandusky vibes here--but not sure why I am getting those suspicions

People, even the Orvis website has the story. And there's a video with some of the actual rescuers: http://www.orvisnews.com/Dogs/Dog-Rescued-from-Colorado-Mountain.aspx

It took them 9 hours to rescue her. All from a photo on the climbing site Jennifer linked.

If these guys have their say, Missy will never go back to Ortolani.

The good news, the owner has been officially charged with animal cruelty.

The bad news is, the court date is October 16th.

I wonder if they can decide the custody issue before the cruelty issue is decided; I doubt it. Poor Missy.

That is good news--maybe she will go to a foster home? Maybe the people who saved her will get to do that....I am such a cock-eyed optimist!
