Help please!  I need to find out what this tree is because it is dropping little berries and they are in the walkway in my back yard.  If they are poisonous, obviously my doodle will need to be kept away!  You can see the little berries among the leaves.....then as they appear on the ground.  They do not have much flesh as there is a big pit/seed in the middle.  The tree is over 60 feet tall and we live in the woods in southern Indiana.  Any help would be appreciated.

No idea BUT take what you have pictured to a nursery nearby and they will tell you what it is and whether or not it is poisonous.  Good luck!

What color are the flowers?

I have never noticed flowers.  Hmmm, I guess it must flower to have berries but they sure must be insignificant.

Could it be a laurel of some type? Maybe a bay laurel?

I looked in my tree book and my guess is a sourgum. Further searching now. Counties have agricultural extension agents, I think everywhere but certainly here, and they should be helpful.

It looks like it may be the Black Gum. I am going to go to a nursery now to see if they know.

Let us know.

The gal at the nursery said it is a Black Gum.  Thanks, F....you got it right!

I was told to call poison control to see if it is dangerous to dogs.  I am going to do that now.

Poison Control in Indiana says there has been "no toxic exposure that they know of" with this tree.  Don't know how I feel about that answer.  They said if the dog eats the berries to "wait and observe".  Okay then....are we the test subjects? LOL  Guess we will be avoiding the area.

I did read that bears and birds eat them. Did Bailey try to eat them?
