This is what i know about her...The rescue called me from New Jersey said they had a goldendoodle in Illinois ,it was an older woman that had the dog and she had to get rid of her because she had developed a heart condition. She is VERY sad over it and cries everytime i talk to her. Her name is Sophie and she will be 3 next month, she comes from a dad that is full blooded Golden and a mom that is full blooded poodle . My husband and myself have met with her n Sopie and shes a real sweetheart,very calm and such a good girl. My lab is also very calm n gets along well with other dogs no problems. Sophie has a medical condition, she has seizures...she has been to a neuroligist and is on medicine for it which seems to be working really well. I know going into this she needs lots of love and thats exactly what she will get ( ; I just thought if you guys could share anything with me about goldendoodles i would love that! I have a beautiful lab ( ; but just dont know much abiut doodles ( ;
Thx Ginny ( ; they are both so easy going i am hoping it will be ok!
Congrats on your rescue!!!!!
I have had many fosters in our home and I do not change from this routine - ever.
Meet and greet on neutral territory.
Old toys and bones away and get new ones.
No rawhides, bones or other high value treats.
Feed them at the same time but your lab gets first. Keep their bowls separate from the other and you stand in the kitchen, watching them eat and do not let one eat out of the others bowl for awhile.
I make my 3 doodles 'work' for their dinner, they must sit and no one gets to eat until they are looking at me and not their bowls. I then ask 1 at a time to come and eat. The others must sit and wait their turn.
I would not allow your doodle on the furniture (if you allow it at all) for a couple of days - let your lab have that one last treat for a little while.
Do lots of walking with them together.
Have fun - don't let your guard down until you are sure that they do not have any issues between them.
thank you, we are so looking forward to getting her!!
This is basically how I integrated my doodle with my older, set-in-his-ways, chihuahua. It worked very, very well.
And as for 3 years old, that's still puppyish! She will be a love for sure, but she might still get a little wild once she gets used to your new home :) - my Peri still does!
Sounds like you are getting a wonderful doodle and I bet your lab and her will be great friends very soon! Congrats.
Good luck to you with your new rescue. I think the meeting outside the house is the most important first step. It's hard to know what to do until you see how things go but you can always ask questions on DK and get lots of advice.
Gayle - Congrats! Please join the "Seizure Disorder" Group. http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/seizures
Make sure that you get all the vet records and enough meds to last you for a while. Also make sure you know exactly how and when to give the meds. Also DO NOT change anything regarding the feeding of Sophie. The amount of "salt" in the diet affects how the meds work. (I am assuming either phenobarbitaul and/or potassium bromide).
If the medication is Potassium Bromide this must be either gotten through your vet or a specialty pharmacy. Phenobarbitual is carried by regular pharmacies. With Phenobarbitaul be careful about the exact dosage as there is 2 different methods of measurement - grains or mgs. 1 grain = 64.8 mgs. So note - 15mg does not = a 1/4 grain. Many pharmacists will do that kind of substitution be careful.
Are you close enough that you can continue to use her current vets?
Also find out what the protocol is If Sophie has a seizure!!!
As stress is a seizure trigger be watchful as re-homing can be stressful.
If you have any questions or just need to discuss it please PM me. (Just accept my friend request and then you can PM (private message) me.)
Thank you for giving Sophie a new home!!!
Thank you so much for the information! I need all i can get. I have a lab already <spoiled rotten> lol But i have never dealt with a dog with sezuires so i am a little nervous but i am so excited about bringing her into our home. I can still use her vet which is a good thing! I thank you so much for the information, i truely appreciate it! I will keep you posted ( ;
YAY! Both of my doodles are resuces and i love them to pieces! I truely feel like they connect with you on such a better level. My parents got their doodle from a breeder and my doods are so much more into humans then theirs is...maybe thats because we spoil them lol One of my rescues came to me perfectly housebroken and well behaved and the other one came to me not potty trained and a crazy girl! But i love her more then anything! The biggest thing i think with getting a rescue is to definitely study their biography that they send about her but more then likely you will have a totally different experience with her. Both of mine were "dog agressive" and almost to the point where their paperwork was making them sound dangerous but when i got them home they were the best dogs ever!! Thank you for rescuing :)
Brittany....she is such a perfect little lady so mild n well mannered. The only thing i worry about is the sezuires. But i can't wait to get her!!
Hi Gayle, just wondering if you are adopting Sophie from DRC? I just saw her on their website and she sounded like your dog. She is beautiful. I look forward to seeing more pictures and hearing your updates.
Amy..yes! thats my girl! isn't she beautiful? I gotta admit i am alittle afraid of the whole seizure thing but i cant wait to get her! So excited! Thank you ( ;
