Three weeks ago I posted about Quincy and an abscess he had on his head that caused us a major amount of concern, two weeks prior to that he had to see the vet because his eyelid was very swollen and inflamed. We just finished 3 weeks of antibiotics and having the abscess drained twice and then yesterday we noticed this. There is also a spot on his lower lip and it seems to be getting bigger.
I have taken him to the vet again who diagnosed it as an allergy and he is now on prednisone and another 10 days of antibiotics. Has anyone ever experienced this? I know Joanne has something similar with Spud's lip but put it down to friction from the large ball he was playing with. Quincy hasn't been doing anything different and there haven't been any changes in his diet. The only thing I can think of is that on Monday he got ahold of a pressure treated garden stake that he stole out of my flower bed but he only had it for a few seconds. I don't really know what to think. :<(
UPDATE; It's been five days and whatever the mystery ailment is, it is slowly getting better, I don't know if it's because of the meds or in spite of them but it's is getting better and that's what matters. It actually looked a little worse for a couple of days, not bigger but it seemed to have tiny blisters. We go back to the vet tomorrow for a recheck. I have no new insights into what may have caused it but just to be on the safe side I did get rid of all the garder stakes today while I was cleaning out the flower beds, it may not be the culprit but I'm not willing to risk it. Thanks to all our friends for their ideas and well wishes, I hope our next discussion is not even remotely related to health issues.
This is a pic from today.

TY Sue, we appreciate the prayers.
I've never had anything quite like that with any of my dogs. Does it seem to be bothering him? Hoping the meds will help it....so sorry Donna.
Jane it doesn't seem to bother him and he is eating and drinking normally.
I have a lot of experience with allergies and this sure doesn't look like anything I've ever seen from any type of allergy. I cannot imagine that this was caused by his having hold of a garden stake for a few seconds. Did the vet say what he thought might have caused an allergic reaction, if that's what it is?
I'm far from a vet or a doctor, but the two things together make me think there might be some type of systemic virus or infection going on with him.
Does it seem to bother him? It's hard to tell what it is from the picture. Is it like a blister?
I sure hope the meds help!
It's not blistered, I was thinking some kind of fungal thing because of the antibiotics but the vet said no. The vet didn't even ask if he had anything different so I'm not quite sure what he thought it was an allergic reaction to. He has seemed to be licking his lips for a few days before it appeared so of course I was watching him like a hawk for any other signs (thinking bloat of course). We have to go back in a week or before if it gets worse. I really hate it when vets talk without listening.
I wonder if it could be like a cold sore virus in people? Has his nose been running at all?
This is what I was thinking Karen....
Did they check for a staph infection?? Stella had one and it caused blotches on her belly area....they somewhat resembled Quincy's mark. My vet told me they are very common, but yet it took us 3 visits to get her diagnosed....she was on meds for about a month and is okay now. I also know that staph infections in dogs can be very difficult to get rid of and can keep coming back...so maybe it's worth asking your vet about?
I couldn't sway the vet away from the allergy thing so no he didn't mention staph. I am not feeling all that secure with the vets assessment right now.
Can't blame you, I wouldn't feel so hot about it either. You never know how good your Vet is until you need him for something other than the yearly shots and check up. Not to say he isn't great but you'd think with Q's recent history he would be more concerned or more passionate about him.
Hope tomorrow you wake up and it's smaller, which of course could mean it was a cold sore or something similar.
:o(
Thanks Lisa, smaller sounds good to me.
